Roberto Martinez discussion

Wigan fan on another forum last season...the contrasts to what we are all seeing this last 18 months are there for all to see.

"Afternoon everyone. I came on here in the summer to express some honest views regarding Martinez but was shot down in flames. 2 games in, some tricky matches and potential banana skins cropping up. Just wondering how you guys rate him so far. He is the master of spin and talks a great game but his management style is shocking. I have seen two games from Everton now and the style of play is frighteningly familiar. tippy tappy football up to the box then nobody shoots. Look how many goals we scored and conceded under Martinez. Its an abysmal record. It's a bottom half finish for Everton i'm afraid. And if you stick by him, Next season will be a relegation battle. I mean after all. He has signed players from a team that was constantly fighting relegation. They can't be that good can they?".

"For 4 seasons we were saying the same things. It get's very repetitive and you will notice that something isn't right. We had all those stats every match but still conceded 70 odd goals for about 3 seasons and ultimately went down. It may be pleasing on the eye but his tactics do not work. They might do 1 in every 10 matches and its like watching Barcelona when it comes off but when it doesn't work it's like watching Burscough".

Pmsl

That's going to upset a few

The reason we leak goals is the utter fraud in goal, swearing and shouting at Everton fans, star jumping, patting balls instead of catching, so yes, thats on Martinez, but to imply that the "defensive system" doesnt work is a complete lie, we play with mostly 2 screening DMs, 1 floats but as a defensive unit we play with 7 defensive players.
If Robles plays a blinder against City, helps us get into the final and Martinez STILL plays Teflon Tim, I'll really start to worry.

You could say that

the best leaders are fully aware of their weaknesses

I'm not suggesting he is the best. He is very good at developing individual players, he can produce the most exhilarating football but he has a blind eye to his weaknesses, hence my comments on recruiting him in the first place.

He's about as good as we could get, but he's not good enough for a club with the ambitions the majority of supporters harbour.

We should be tight at the back but we just let teams come at us and cross for fun.
I lost count at the amount of crosses bournemouth put in the box.
The bottom line is martinez has not got a clue how to get us to defend as a team.

Quick check on www.statto.com will give you the answer. Looks to me like it's higher under Martinez by around 8-10 goals a season on average. If we carry on scoring at the rate we are at the halfway stage we will have our highest goal scoring season for around 15 years.

So is it wildly different on average over the last 3 seasons compared to DM last 3 seasons - I'm just trying to adopt some form of quantitative measure of the claim ' best attacking football for years'. Qualitative assessment is of course wholly subjective.

They got lucky then

I disagree but that's for another thread.

They got Brenda who blew 100's of millions and probably put them back 10 years.

If Martinez leaves he'll leave an outstanding group of players built in a fraction of the amount the other crowd had.

The major disappointment with our performances this season is the fact that the team is potentially so good, they should be doing a lot better.

In comparison to Moyes our points return is better than usual for a Moyes team at this stage, with a semi final thrown in.
