Roberto Martinez discussion

A competent Wigan manager now managing a good squad in the Premier League.

Let's be fair to him, he is way out of his depth. A more clinical owner/board would now sack him, but it won't happen until the Yanks/Jordanians/Martians take us over.

People are right that there is a deep problem.

The deep problem is that Martinez's core philosophy is totally incompatible with being a solid defensive team. That's the trade-off you buy into with Martinez as manager. It's not just his tactics, it's the mentality that slowly infuses into the players over time working with him. (Ever notice how very few of our players know how to tackle in a 50-50?)

But he needs really quickly to teach the players how to switch to a different way of playing mid-game. The worrying thing is that he has never acknowledged the problem. After the Newcastle game, he said we'd learned lessons from the previous games. But we patently hadn't, and the lessons seemed to be about how to fluke last minute winners.

At the end of the season, we'll have to decide whether the Martinez trade-off is a net benefit to us. At the moment, it's really in the balance for me. It's annoying to fail to challenge the top four when you have the squad to do it. It would set the club back years if we ever went down, and that's the real risk under Martinez compared with Moyes.

Zero chance of relegation.

We were much worse last season and didn't get relegated.

3 points of the top 6, which is where we should probably finishing.

That's achievable. The current situation really isn't that bad.

We were much worse under Moyes at time and people weren't calling for his head

Mate I applaud your +ve attitude, but you are being unfair to DM. He had to manage in a different era -we are comparatively more equal now with quality players accessible to all. RM has not convinced that he can implement a system that can be successful over the competition. Other EPL managers so far this season have clearly demonstrated they are far more innovative.

Defending. Where is the progress there? Corners? Set pieces?

We are great fun to watch attacking at the moment. But when the goals dry up (you say they invariably will banging on how Leicester cant sustain their form) you have to defend. What Everton are you watching can defend if we Lukaku loses form?
Best football we've seen for years. I'm buzzing with our play. We need a quality forward to come in to take up the slack from Lukaku though.

Not in the slightest.

Anyone who cant see progress in this team needs their head feeling.

The level of RAWKism on here is superb. The ability to call someone a geordie while acting like a flag waving kopite is quite frankly bizarre, the praise that Martinz has received over the last 1 hour is remarkable, almost reminisce of our loveable neighbours and they're cultish behaviour towards Rodgers, "How am I doin’ boss?"

A fanatical critic of Martinez I was last year, the dull dire predicable football was enough to force one to seriously look at that bottle of domestos. I hold no grudge to level of criticism I levied towards our lovable Latino, and the start of the new season as seen a dramatic improvement in our ability to score, attacking with ease knowing that we will score.

However the elephant in the room is still sitting there, and it’s our inability to be able to defend, a notion that was so evident last year and coupled with the stagnant movement up top almost forced us into a situation we hadn’t seen in years.

We are culpable at every opportunity an opposition attacks us, not at one point, whilst 3-2 up, did I think we had the ability to see this through without conceding again, and low and behold we conceded 2. A shambles of a defence that is going to rail road our season once again, and yet the manager is still convinced that playing a certain way is more important than gaining points, because if all players are pulling in the same direction then its only inventible that the results will follow.

The notion from some “fans” that these marvellous young players will learn, and once this magical occurrence happens world domination will be ours. Utter bollox gents, we live in a world where money talks and as soon as, even if not before, these players gain maturity and become invisibles then you’ll see them on Sky Sports holding aloft their new Barcelona/Chelsea/United/Munich shirt followed by statement thanking Everton FC for some fabulous years.

Then we are back to square one, another “potential” group of youngsters who we are all jizzing over, making the same mistakes followed by the same arguments on here about the golden generation.

Roberto Martinez needs to realise that this is Everton, not Wigan, conceding 7 goals in 2 home games to Stoke and Leicester is not acceptable, even in our darkest days it is not acceptable and to save himself from a torrent of abuse, which brewing once again, he needs to bite the bullet and sort this shambles out.

Am I happy with how we are generally playing yes; he has showed that he can vary the play and even teams who sit deep can now be picked apart and we can score freely.

Am I happy with how we defend; no. It’s been 18 months of the same mistakes, the same ideology and the utter fragile, “shattered glass” like back 4 we have.

Lets see...i hope youre right. Regular moaners are here to stay thats the way it is. Im so effing dissapointed that i have difficulties to keep my cool. It's true what you said about our young players...we need time to develop towards better consistency. We can be brilliant...and we can be pssst poor. Our opponents never know which one they get lol

I wouldn't swap what Roberto has done attack wise for the world. It's frustrating but we have to go through this teething trouble and retain our identity as an attack based team.

TH getting the bullet will help.
