Roberto Martinez discussion

No mate, it's the difference between a player who suits the team as a defender and one who is better going forward (a quality we're not short of right now). It's all about blend and Baines with Kone/Mirallas ahead of him is a recipe for weakness at the back.

Mate Galloway is not better at anything than Baines is yet, and leaving him out because our left side wide players are utter crap is absolutely insane. Also are people remembering things differently about Pienaar - exactly how much defensive work did he do for Baines as i really don't remember hima s this protective shield some seem to now think he was

Yeah there's been a few. But this fella takes the biscuit.

There's no way he's up to it because there's been plenty of opportunities last season to replace Howard and Martinez clearly didn't take them. Like I said there's no way he'd risk his career on backing Howard over Robles (a player he bought) over some petty stubborn streak.

I think Martinez is terrified of losing the dressing room or causing a split within it by replacing Howard mate, either that or he actually just cannot judge a keeper at all, which would explain if your opinion on Robles is correct why he managed to buy him not only once but twice - although that would also cast a huge amount of doubt on Howard and Martinez judgement on him as well, what a quandary

One minute people say the defence don't trust Howard and the next you get people like yourself saying Martinez is worried about the influence Howard has.

Maybe it's just as simple as Howard is the better option out of the two. Plus to be fair to Martinez he wouldn't be the first manager to struggle with goalkeepers. Ferguson and Wenger have struggled over the years and their the best two managers the leagues had for 25 years.

I agree about kone because its just not working.
I would go with kev at home and tom away but i agree we need a pienaar esque player in but i would not sell kev
Mirallas is halfway out the door, imo. He'll want first team football with Euro2016 looming.

The two lines of thinking are not mutually exclusive though mate

You can have a player who has an influence within the dressing room with certain players whilst at the same point other players not having confidence with him.

Ferguson didn't struggle for too long with Howard mate, he realised he wasn't good enough for his team and shipped him off to us and seriously upgraded the position. But really i'm not going to slate Ferguson over keepers when he had Schmeichel, VanDeSaar, Barthez and De Gea all bought by him to the club. As ofr Wenger at least he has been constantly trying to upgrade and find the answer to sub standard keepers and he hasn't been shy about pulling one for another when they are shown to not be good enough

That goal keeping coach with the cap probably has a big say in this and RM goes along with it

Galloway: you're forgetting how well he tracks back and competes physically with the opposition. He's definitely a better defender than Baines (which isn't a great claim like given how ropey Baines has always been defending his own box and positionally all told).

Pienaar: staggered at that comment mate. He was always in close proximity to Baines and if it broke down higher up the pitch he was there mopping up. No question he dug Baines out loads of times and allowed him to attack as much.

That's the sign of a top manager, making changes/replacing even before the fans realise a player is naff

He might not be better than Baines, but he is a damn sight better than Funes Mori.

Play a back four of Coleman, Stones, Galloway and Baines and there will be instant improvement

Howard: Let's be fair - he wasn't always this bad. He was a very decent shot stopper and pretty agile, saving with feet and body. Now he's very poor. No redeeming features for me.

Why does Martinez keep picking him then? He's had five transfer windows to get a new one. I am fairly certain he will pass up a 6th as well.
