James McCarthy

It's very rare I've came away from a game in the past couple of years thinking I wish we'd got stuck in more.

A lack of dynamism/creativity in the final third against teams we're probably better than is what I think has cost us.
How many derbies have you watched? It's not restricted to those games only but it's the best example I can offer.

No it isn't. It's referring to us being soft touches and being too fair and not benefitting.

Condescending manners eh.

We still have a bit to go to get real snidey.

We were at it again today, my pet hate, this nonsense of kicking the ball out when that Hammers player pretended to be injured and a counter attack was stopped as it was about to go live.

The West Ham players were pointing at our guys and telling them to stop......the ref never blew and when the ball went out of play he went over and told him to get up.

Baines is terrible for doing it.

In the cup tie we lost at Arsenal he stopped a promising attack when Arteta was rolling around play acting in the centre circle.

And in the Wigan cup tie he put the ball out of play when a Wigan player was laying injured.....on the other side of the touchline

More snide needed.

You're better at highlighting examples to @dannyboy than I.

All the top times have that bit of snide about them. Our eighties team wouldn't be shithoused out of a game either.

So you admit they don't play the same role then?

Sorry if it came off as condescending, but you kind of were doing the same thing IMO. Maybe I misread.

Martinez is obviously basing this system on the Spanish set up, very similar to be Alonso and Masceranho at Liverpool, only our duo aren't at that standard.

I just think in that role McCarthy plays right now we could with someone who gives the opposition more to think about when he's going forward.

I accept your surrender.

How's that a Spanish set up?

Pretty sure Mascherano is Argentinian too.

I get where you're coming from, I just think it's more infuriating to us as fans than actually costing us points. The Anfield Derby being the exception year upon year.

Very much based on the Barcelona approach. I genuinely just think we could be progressive as a team with a bit more dynamism in the middle of the park... At least in certain games anyway.

I agree with your point of someone more attacking needed next to the midfield holding player, particularly against teams who will sit deep. Perhaps the system would leave us more exposed though. Barry brings a calming intelligent influence and McCarthy does a lot of the harrying and distribution of the ball.

But really speaking our regular midfield two benefits us more than it hampers us.

I thought (and I'm liable to be wrong as I don't watch much foreign togger) that Barcelona was set up with one deep protective midfield player with a couple of play makers in front of him.

To be fair you're probably right, and I'm done in from a very hard night in town.

Martinez probably bases his set up on that Alonso/Masceranho thing. I've actually forgotten the point I was arguing as well so I'll give up now and give you the win.

You know.....that post could have been written by one of your FM mates :(

The only thing keeping you street is the fact you say "playmakers" instead of the dread "no. 10" :p
