13 points out of 10 games

West Ham have beaten all these top sides that we haven't.
Are West Ham top 4 this season?
Are they better than us?

To finish 6th would be an amazing achievement with our style of play and defending.

I set a tally of 15 points from those 10 games when I first saw the fixture list. A win against Watford and we'd have got that. But we had 13 from 8 games so back to back losses was disappointing especially the performance against Man Utd. Arsenal away is always tough and its our first defeat away. Our home form needs to pick up starting with Norwich and then Sunderland (whom have beaten us in last two seasons at Goodison). After that we can pick up.

Best of the rest isn't good enough, and never was. And the reality of it is that we end up with a fixture headache the following season.

Cup wins and/or a takeover are our only routes out of the situation we're in. Finishing between 5th and 7th with a nice pat on the head from the media is no consolation whatsoever. We've had that and look what it got us. Nothing.

I've always found this idea very strange. The difference between 5th and 10th is usually about 15-20 points. Finishing 5th means winning an extra 5 or 6 games a season which I would like us to do because, you know, it's the whole point of the game.

I'm not sure whether you go to the games or not, but I do. And travelling up and down the country watching us get beat is not a lot of fun. The more games we win, the happier I'll be. To be honest it seems quite perverse to see it any other way.

Huge difference between finishing fifth and tenth. Not just prize money, but players like Barkley and Stones will just about stay if you've got Europa league, no chance of you're consistently tenth. Takeover will or won't happen regardless of league position so the logic of 'we may as well just finish anywhere and wait for a takeover' is bizarre. The Europa league didn't seem to affect us that much under Moyes. 07/08 was our highest points tally and a good Europa run. Doesn't seem to affect Spurs every year either. Let's be honest we just used it as a huge excuse for a poor season where we actually played worse when the Europa wasn't on.

No Europa this season anyway. No reason whatsoever we can't qualify for it and have decent cup runs. 10th is an appalling season.
Players left Everton when we finished top 5-7, they'll leave us if we finish top 10. It's a non-argument. Players will stay if we win a trophy.

As for the EL - it's statistically proven to have a bad impact on a club's league performance, no matter what example you bring up that proves the rule.

Top 10 is adequate as long as a good cup run is put together.

As said on top 7 finishes: been there, done that, got the t-shirt. It means nothing.

Winning playing a brand of football that isn't a complete embarrassment is the point of the game.

This line of argument is becoming bizarre. There's no reason why we can't qualify for the EL and win a trophy. In the same argument you're defending midtable finishes urging us not to be top 7 because we'll have Europa which could lead to.....a mid table finish. Europa also gives you another precious trophy chance. 10th with no trophy is a very bad season, there's no getting away from that.

That last bit is subjective. There's been some hugely embarrassing stuff under Martinez depending on which way you look at it. The argument 'I just like Martinez's football better so the results are irrelevant' is ridiculous. Moyes had us in the top 7. Martinez as a minimum needs to maintain that. If he's finishing lower consistently then his football is statistically worse regardless of whether you like nice sideways passing or not.

I agree.

Hopefully we can get rid of the clown in charge now who thinks the best thing to do after conceding a goal is have his players play some half arse tippy tappy crap between themselves in their own defensive third before losing the ball and conceding a second.

Embarrassment indeed!

No, that's an ideal. The point of the game is to win.

what I'm driving at, is that while finishing 5th wouldn't necessarily make me deliriously happy, I would be happier than if we finished 10th because we'd have won more games. It's fairly straightforward. If we do that by playing brilliantly in every game, I'll be even happier.
