Right. Look at how well Wigan, Birmingham, and Portsmouth have kicked on since their cup wins!
It's better than being afraid to compete in the league lest we wind up like Tottenham. Davek is saying we shouldn't try to compete in the league and concentrate on the cups instead. So you put Everton in a category with Wigan, Brum and Pompey?
Three clubs which have spent my lifetime yo-yo ing up and down the divisions.
A sad day when Evertonians are afraid to compete to win a trophy lest we wind up like Wigan.
And a far cry from the days when Howard's struggling team in the winter of '83/4 used two cup finals as a springboard to even greater glory.
Know your history.

I would very much doubt @davek would either say or think such a thing.
Competing in the league and competing in the cups are not mutually exclusive.
And I for one would accept a position one place above the relegation trap door and a Wembley cup success over a season like last where we avoided relegation comfortably, finished in a mind numblingly mid table position and exited both domestic cups at the first hurdle..
Would you not?
No ones saying we don't want a trophy, but why can't it be in conjunction with a decent league place.
Good in principle but that's about 15 mill in league prize money you're throwing away in comparison to coming 5th. Those two scenarios are Wiganesque. Scrape survival and nick a cup, or finish lower mid table. Last time I checked Martinez inherited a top 6 squad so why have we suddenly written off top 6 finishes?
60 points would get a good league placing.First @davek is saying poor Martinez cant be expected to get a cup run and league placing while in the Europa, now hes saying he cant get a league placing and do well in the cups.
If the task of managing a Premiership Club is to much for him maybe he should move to Spain or something the utter clown.

Let's face it: a top half of the table finish that goes hand in hand with a lengthy cup run is going to be satisfactory.
There's no chance of the CL spots even in our best season; the EL spots are a danger to our following season.
Just go for broke in the cups and maintain a creditable top half position. Job done until we get our takeover...IF we ever get our takeover.
Best of the rest isn't good enough, and never was. And the reality of it is that we end up with a fixture headache the following season.
Cup wins and/or a takeover are our only routes out of the situation we're in. Finishing between 5th and 7th with a nice pat on the head from the media is no consolation whatsoever. We've had that and look what it got us. Nothing.
I know here is a mad idea
Let's try and do well in everything we are in - Prem and Cups
