Computer games.

Oh, and best three modern games I've played - The Last of Us (not actually a fan as I felt the story a bit mediocre, but in terms of game mechanics and getting the atmosphere spot on I appreciate it as a masterpiece), Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (for obvious reasons) and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - which is the best game you've never played.

What a game that is.

i'd go something like, the first GTA in 3d , doom and something like first mario

for influence and importance, all a bit of fun as its completely subjective

interested to hear @Mikey_Fitzgerald on this..

My three favourite games would be

Donkey Kong Country 2 on the SNES

ISS Pro 98' on the PlayStation

Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 on the N64

To try and objectively choose the three "best" I'd probably go with

The original Super Mario Brothers for basically getting the home video game market back on it's feet again after it pretty much being dead

Outside of that, I'd probably go Final Fantasy VII and maybe the original Deus EX on the PC

True story, I actually don't like FF VII. This isn't because I think it's a bad game, I just hate turn based RPG combat, so I've just never wanted to play it as a result. It's incredibly popular though and was revolutionary for the time

Deus EX would make the list because I think it was another evolutionary step in video games. It's also a lot of fun to play

That's just my view on things though

I think most of us would have Super Mario on the list in some form. That's the only one where I'd feel you HAVE to have it the list. The other two I could easily see being argued against

Super Mario Brothers on the NES is probably why this forum has a Computer Games thread, which is why I think it has to make the top three

Pffft, don't be so presumptuous!

*clicks install on the game that's been in their Steam library for about 2 years without ever being played*

what would everyone say are the top 3 games of all time? i realise this is stupid question..ahem

what are the godfather/citizen kane etc of the computer game world?

thank you

Chrono Trigger was (and still is) an incredible game. I normally can't bear JRPGs, but this is the utter tits.

Fallout 3. Just beats Times of Lore and Ultima VII for me, mainly as I spent 100s of hours (and still dip into it) scouring the wasteland, and post-apoc just gets me excited.

Half Life. Might be I enjoyed the sequel more, but for a narrative driven FPS it really set the standard, which has since been drastically lowered by the likes of Treyarch. The music, AI, loading times (not even sure there were any!) are all perfect. Then there was the engine - Counter Strike, Portal, Garry's Mod, Inurgency, Chivalry, Day of Defeat - all games that began as mods of Half Life, for that reason alone it has to be one of the most important games ever written.

As actual if I'm the only one who has said Sensible World of Soccer.

I considered it. Would be interested to know how many hours I ploughed into that beauty.

Give me one of these and I'd still rinse everyone I reckon.

Class game - Can't understand why it didn't get more credit

Always here people going on about that one, but checked it out and it just didn't appeal...

For me I would say the original GTA. 3 may have made the step to 3D, but none of that, or any of the games that that spawned would have happened without the brilliance of the original. It may only be 2D, but it was pretty much perfect at what it did, and in many ways tbh I sometimes would rather play it that way than in 3D.

Quake. Kind of the opposite reasoning here. Wolfenstein, Doom, Duke 3D were all great games, but Quake was the first FPS to have real 3D, great graphics for the time, the type that age well as the artistic quality was so good, one of the first quality MP games, and possibly the first professionally competitive MP scene, and 1st gaming 'star' (a guy called Thresh I think), basically launched the modding scene, and had many games or staples of FPS games that grew out of it's mods (and CTF style games, Team Fortress to name two), a decent single player game, and the best model for a Freemium game going ('Demo' was the whole 1st episode, then you had to buy ep2-4). Launched the careers of iD and Romero (Deus Ex) into the stratosphere.

After that I don't know. A Mario or FF game would be a good shout. For me personally probably something like CM3. The first one that I lost days and days to, and I think that was when it really started to turn into the game it is now, with increased depth and detail, but not the possible overkill they have nowadays. Oh and it wasn't a whole new game every year back then either iirc!
