This is an interesting new development, and a difficult one for us. I don't think it is as big as is being made out though. Stones by all accounts expressed his desire to leave a couple of weeks ago. It has not just come out that he has made that official. There is every chance that Kenwright and the board have said if he wants to leave he needs to make it clear in writing, this foregoing some of the loyalty payments.
As regards Chelsea, there is a notion from all that we will definitely sell now, for whatever the price. We should hold firm on this. Liverpool didn't budge when Sterling put in a transfer request and messed about far more than Stones has done. He also had only 2 years on his contract not the 4 Stones did. Stones has made his bed now in saying he wants to leave. It would be reasonable to assume we would look to facilitate that, but only if our price is matched. We can all speculate what that price would be, but we can still set a price and let Stones know he will be sold pending Chelsea meeting our valuation.
As others have stated I think this should increase as we get closer to the transfer window. I think it should be a minimum of 40 million we look for, and this should become closer to 50 million if it comes to deadline day. Clearly Chelsea think we are going to blink and bottle it now he's said he wants to go.
IF we don't sell him he's not going to stop playing. It is Euro championships year and I'm sure he'll be committed.
As for Stones, it's a disappointing turn though I'm hardly surprised. He will treble his wages at Chelsea, and I can't see us being happy to pay him 100k per week, nor would we want too. I appreciate the fact he has continued to play for us and not thrown a tantrum ah la De Gea and Sterling.
