I'm surprised by Merson as he used to seem complimentary about us whenever I used to watch Soccer Saturday. Thinking about this again, it seems even more nonsensical.

Everton finds itself under attack more during a normal game than Chelsea.

Ergo it stands to sense that defenders at Everton will be required to defend more than those at Chelsea.

Which would suggest a young defender is going to learn more about defending when he is actually doing it than he would if he spends more time loitering on the halfway line watching his own team probe the defences of the opposition for long periods.
