Change of style next season?

Everton 'playing two defensive midfielders' is always a lazy analysis. I think the heat map for the pair in almost every game would suggest otherwise...especially McCarthy's.

Essentially McCarthy and Barry are defensive minded midfielders though. Fair enough McCarthy got forward more last third of the season, but imagine if that had been a more attack minded player.

I wanna see us bring back the back three next season. It's coming back into fashion, and it's can help us cover space much more effectively. A 3-4-1-2 with Barkley/Cleverley and McCarthy in midfield a new number 10 further up against weaker teams, with Lukaku up front and Naismith as a Second Striker. Back Three of Stones, Jags and maybe Galloway or a new CB?

Whatever happened to box to box midfielders. How come they have to be predominantly attacking or defensive players nowadays.seeing a midfielder who can't tackle.or 1 who's almost a 3rd centre back drives me mad

Its the 4-2-3-1 which drives you mad then (and alot of teams seem to play it these days)

As far as I understand it the 2 defensive midfield players are intrinstic to 4-2-3-1 with attacking fullbacks. When both fullbacks are pushed forward, one of the the 2 defensive midfield players moves back to form a back 3. Barry always does this job for us.

I think when teams play 4-3-3 they *usually* have 1 defensive midfielder and 2 traditional box to box midfielders alongside. As a few other people have mentioned this could be good for Ross.

McCarthy - Barry

Osman - Barkley - Cleverley

Lukaku
There's your midfield/attack first game of next season.

Coleman and Baines are both capable of defence and attack

That formation gives them a chance to be more attacking while also insuring we have cover at the back with the extra CB

I think you missed the part where we have the 2 most attacking fullbacks in the whole world mate.

3 at the back and Baines in midfield, these 2 things make me want to murder stuff Mikey.

I would stay the same - we have the players - Lennon and Mirallas are essential - for the system to work you need to spring the counter attack quickly in the first phase.
