Jagielka

To be fair the English generally completely mispronounce every foreign name. They can't even say Boberto's last name right FFS...like one of the most common Spanish names, and they get it wrong every time.

There was once a young feller named Jags,
So desperate to get off the Fags,
He tackled it Cold Turkey,
And boy did that Workey,
Freeing up more digits for fingering Wags.

He's a very good old fashioned stopper centre half, when he just concentrates on getting rid of the ball, when he is
asked to play the ball around he is not so good. I think. He has been excellent the last few weeks and has led by
example to get us out of trouble, I hope he has a couple of more seasons playing like this.

I agree.

And I think the reason his performances have stood out of late is because we haven't been trying to play as much football. It's been backs to the wall of late and that leans heavily on his defending skills. The problem we have with him, and always will have with him, is that if we want to play out, as you must do to be a progressive team looking to play in a controlled way and not just slash the ball back to the opposition, you have to have defenders who have a better feel for the ball than him.

I see him as an asset in the sense he can, in certain games where we're under the cosh (or likely to be so), step in and give solidity to our defence; but (and this is Martinez's dilemma going into the summer) he's very limited in what he can offer a team hoping to play it on the deck from the back. He's not good at distributing any range of pass, and he WILL get caught on the ball a lot close to goal if he's made to persevere with a distributive role. He's the captain and he's not just going to be dropped. That's Martinez's problem.

We need to be looking to get at least one very good CB in this summer. Next season will turn very sour very quickly if we go into it trying to build on a Jagielka/Stones partnership at the back. Personally I'd say we have to be looking to have 4 CBs in the squad with Jagielka one of them but not one of the preferred starters. I cant see Martinez tolerating seeing Everton playing in this manner we play in right now for next season, so he cant be leaving his job in the hands of a defensive player ill-suited to playing the way he wants to.

He would suit team like west ham perfectly...style wise.
Dont get me wrong I like him.

But I think we need ball playing CB.
Stones is our future...if we get good CB in what does that mean for Jags?

It's going to be difficult to drop him as he's our captain (apparently, though you'd never know it). But how can you build out from the back with him there?

I dont know, maybe if we play with 3 at the back he becomes less of a liability and his stopper attributes are required as long as you have two either side of him able to play a bit. I really dont see RM going that way though. You can see how Liverpool or any other team that perseveres with it can get over run.

We need to be starting Stones (who, btw, is still far from the finished product) with a commanding CB able to distribute the ball a lot more efficiently than Jagielka.

It requires the boldest act of Martinez's time in football to do the right thing here, but I dont think he'll risk the politics of it rebounding on him. It shouldn't be this way either. Jagielka is an England international, it's crazy that he's so bang average at the playing side of the CB role.

Same way we did last season when he helped us get our record points total?

Disgrace to see how easy you turn on our captain, no loyalty whatsoever.

Or we could just wait till jags is successful in his plot to get rid of martinez and get big stubbsy in.
