Captain Sensible

Let's face it, Jagielka is probably the worst Everton captain in living memory. A time like this demands leadership on the pitch and we have this jellyfish with the armband.

I'd actually have him over Jagielka. Playing-wise too. That's how much Jagielka's stock has fallen this season. We needed a lionheart and got stuck with a faintheart.

Jagielka has had a decent season I think, I couldn't count the number of times he's made last ditch tackles where an opposition forward is one-and-one with Terrible Tim.

He's stunk the place out, imo. The level of performances from a so called captain has been a disgrace. The odd decent game where he's made a covering tackle aside, he's been woeful. That has to be unacceptable for an Everton captain. We've had some fiercely competitive CB captains over the years; real leaders. Jagielka is somewhere near the bottom of the pile.

You'd have Neville back?!?!?!?

Dave, Dave, Dave! What happened to voice of reason?

All those plots, imagined or otherwise, have got you chasing false idols

Because he's not ripping heads of Ferguson style, or waving his arms around like a Thai Ladyboy he's a bad captain?

Also, do you remember Neville vs Wigan a few year back?

Yeah, what Barkley needs after this season is a load more unnecessary pressure heaped on him.

Glad you agree ;) but seriously, what he needs is to understand that he is integral to everything Everton should be about. Homegrown, top class players to allow us to compete with rich teams in this league. He will carry that mantle so the sooner he realises he needs to step up the better IMO. It will also give him the confidence to play his way, at the moment he is unsure of himself, give him the armband and watch him go.

I was waiting for someone to say Barkley tbh. Maybe in the future. He is too young and still has plenty to learn in his own game for now.

I remember people didnt fancy Beckham as England captain, but look at how brilliant he was when he was made captain, took his committment, effort and performances all up to another level. Hate to say it but same happened with Gerrard at the rs. The armband makes some players more than they would be otherwise.

Are you geninuely saying that our downturn in form is due to our choice in captain?

I can't even...

Partly yes. Of course it is. If captains contributions were negligible why would the position continue to exist??

The bar is set very low if he's had a good season playing-wise. Early on he was singularly responsibe for us falling apart at the back. He might have stabilised since then, but really what has the feller done other than a bog standard job? We're conceding goals from set pieces like a load of Lewis's dummies. What's he doing there to stop that?

...and that's leaving to one side his chronic leadership 'qualities'.

I agree a new captain is a good idea somebody who will command the respect of the players. If you won't play for Roberto play for me type of character . Problem is I dont think we have any player like that

What do you expect him to do? Mark every single man in the box himself and bicycle kick out out of our box, over the opposition goalkeeper Sensible-Soccer-style?

I mean come on, he's been probably one of our better players this season (I know that's not saying much). It's typical for you lot to try and find a scapegoat, but Jagielka isn't it so go do one.

Maybe are issue with set pieces is down to the fact that Martinez doesn't bother with them.

I expect him to organise...you know, what the likes of Terry does at Chelsea...that'd be nice. Mind you, having seen his post match interviews you'd have to wake him up first to receive any instructions.
