Leighton Baines will be assessed ahead of Wednesday's Premier League game at Chelsea. The Everton left-back was missing from Saturday's squad for the Merseyside derby despite a late fitness test on a knee injury. Speaking after the 0-0 draw, Martinez said: "It was a disappointment. As you can imagine, Leighton did not want to miss the game for anything and we tried everything to get him fit.
"But the knee wouldn’t settle and we had a fitness test this morning which showed he wasn’t 100 per cent to play. "I don’t know about Wednesday [against Chelsea]. I don’t think it is a long-term problem and I think he could be available – if the game was a week away, I would definitely feel that he would be ready.
Another absentee from the teamsheet to face Liverpool was
Aiden McGeady.
"Aiden had a knock in training and has a bruised bone in the knee," Martinez explained. "I think he will be a little bit longer than Wednesday, even though it is not a serious problem."
