AS a FB it would be fatal to be diving in all the time though. Fact is he dispossessed Ibe and others on a number of occasions. 9 times out of 10 Ibe's shot would have gone nowhere and his backing off on this occasion would have been seen as the proper thing to have done.

I'm puzzled as to the basis on which some posters have made this conclusion since we've seen very little of Garbutt.

Quite a few do rate Garbutt here though. I like his crossing skills.

Thought oviedo got roasted for the first 30 minutes or so but soon got to grips and was ok for the remainder, did well going forward too.

Both our full backs werent getting much cover

Love Garbutt to start against Chelsea. We've got nothing to lose and, in the long run, it'll be worth it if it makes Luke sign the contract.

Thought Oviedo got better as the game went on but still a bit too lightweight for me defensively.

Not saying you (or anyone else) is wrong, just stated what I remember from the game really lol

He did a decent job, but the backing off at times doesn't work - it would work against a McGeady-type of player that has pace, cuz when he knocks it past him - he's ready to close him down quickly, or tackle, etc etc, but Ibe just ran straight at him. If Liverpool played a system with a winger on the right - Oviedo would be overexposed so much because of that backing off, as he often required Besic/McCarthy to help anyway, and would've left a winger essentially to do whatever he wants on the wing.

The problem yesterday that Ibe had a clear run on Oviedo as he had no covering winger in front of him he had acres of room to build up his speed - also do we know for certain that Garbutt is leaving???

Do you know this for a fact mate ? If not, please stop spreading these damaging rumours.
As I said before I heard in the ground that Garbutt had said that he was. How's it damaging any more than saying Kev is leaving?

No one takes as gospel anything anyone says on a forum but if I'm right which I probably am since if he was staying he would have signed a contract then that's the situation so we shouldn't be expecting or even wanting Garbutt to play instead of Oviedo. At the end of the day only Garbutt is in control of the situation.

The fact that a player's nearing the end of his contract proves nothing. Expect the worst, if you're that way inclined : sometimes you'll be right and sometimes you'll be wrong.

As for what you heard in the ground, we're supposed to take that seriously because ??

Miralles has made public comments about wanting to play in the Champions League etc, so we know he could be leaving. He's also said that he'll make his mind up at the end of the season, and there could be some truth in that. Things can change.

As for Garbutt, who knows whether he's made any decisions at this stage ? It made sense for him not to agree to anything last summer because he wasn't in the squad. The more he's involved in the team and getting time on the pitch the more likely he is to stay, but it's also in his interest to wait and see what other offers come his way.

I'm not arguing against any of that but the club also has to do what is in their interests.

To play Garbutt ahead of Oviedo where there is very little difference at this moment (Garbutt is more talented but Oviedo more experienced, although I think Garbutt will be better) would do two things. 1. Demotivate a player we know is staying and 2. It means Oviedo doesn't get game time which is important when coming back from injury. Both of these things would risk next season.

I know not playing him also carries the risk of guaranteeing him leaving but at some point you simply have to make a judgment at how likely that is now. Personally I think he would have signed if he wanted to stay so I think the guy whom I overheard who I have no idea is ITK or where he heard it from is probably right.

Either way Martinez probably knows for sure so if he's not picking Garbutt we probably shouldn't get on his case.

Even if he does think he will play next season doesn't necessarily mean he will stay. If someone else further up the league comes in for him he might think they're a better bet for his career. At the end of the day in the summer he's as likely to sign for someone else than us.
