Leighton Baines

Much missed today.

Not just for his attacking prowess but Oviedo looked lost against tgat Ide bloke who hasn't played in their team in yonkos.
Bollocks mate. You obviously didn't go the game but have just watched MOTD selecting their next RS player to fawn over for the next 5 years in their spotlight of Ide. Oviedo had a good game. Did you not notice that in scratching round for clips to show how great Ide apparently was Oviedo actually took the ball off him twice! Never be fooled by TV highlights.

You lost me at bollocks.

I thought Oviedo done o.k. wasn't great but done a job.our fullbacks have been shyte all season so a 6 out of 10 performance from Oviedo was about the norm

I wouldn't deny that he did "o.k" but I thought he should have done better than o.k. against a rookie teenager.

He was given the runaround by Ide on occasion and he offered very little in attack.

I am sure it was a one off performance because he is usually so much better than that.

It's just today made me realise hiw much I appreciate Leighton Baines.

Fair point mate regarding Baines and appreciating him. Would have definitely preferred him than Oviedo.

Think we all tend to take Baines far too much for granted tbh. He's often judged to have had a poor game if he hasn't got two assists and a clean sheet.

Our corners did look a bit better today though, wish he'd regain his form on those.

I agree. It seems like there are always people calling for Oviedo or Garbutt over Baines. I don't agree with it, personally.

So how many times did Ibe actually get past Oviedo? Don't tell me we've all fallen for the mOTD hype on Ibe already.

I too am a fan of Oviedo but there is little doubt that Ibe scared him shitless in the first half. Turning his back on Ibe as the boy ran straight at him was worrying.
But Oviedo got better as the game unfolded and I thought he had a fair game overall.

And as has been pointed out at least his corners got past the first defender.

Little doubt though that we missed Baines.

I think it's just a case of familiarity breeding contempt. We all know Baines is class, but we are used to him now, so some people want to see something different just for the sake of it.

About 2, and Oviedo just never went in with a challenge about 3 more, including the post Ibe hit.
AS a FB it would be fatal to be diving in all the time though. Fact is he dispossessed Ibe and others on a number of occasions. 9 times out of 10 Ibe's shot would have gone nowhere and his backing off on this occasion would have been seen as the proper thing to have done.
Oviedo has done ok lately but I think Garbutt is a better option at LB, generally speaking.
I'm puzzled as to the basis on which some posters have made this conclusion since we've seen very little of Garbutt.
