Tim Howard

For this season maybe, but not long-term.

Howard is a bloody nightmare and needs to be sold ASAP. He seldom boots the ball up the pitch, and seems obsessed with playing a dangerous ball to a defender which gets us absolutely nowhere and frequently leads to us conceding goals. Howard and Distin were an absolutely awful combination.

Hopefully Howard will go to the USA in the Summer, his days in the Premiership are numbered.
Do you not think he's told to pass it out instead of launching it down the field?

absolutely wrong, we were terrible down the left hand side and poor in general in that game, we were lucky to get a result, like we were a few times in the early months of the season, and a failure to see that and do something about it then is one of the reasons we are in the rut we are now. It was the worst selection I've ever seen, worse than anything walker, smith or moyes have done

We weren't "terrible" down the left hand side.

Deary me, I have never heard such an over reaction to a team selection when we have won a game.

I take it you weren't there the day Walter lined up with four centre backs at home to Derby County or on the occasions Moyes played without a striker. If you had been, you wouldn't make those outlandish claims about the "worst team selection" you have ever seen.

And for all you know, sticking in a rookie defender may have had a very detrimental effect and he may have made a mistake to cost us the points.

You just don't know, do you.

As I say, there are lots of reasons to criticise Martinez this season and I haven't been slow about voicing many of them.

But dragging up a team selection from a few months back and in a game we won is just complaining fir the sake of it.

yes we were, and I said it at the time, not just in light of our recent poor form, it was a shocking selection, and one that has driven a talented left back away from the club, and I won't blame garbutt one little bit.

Garbutt may well have had a poor game, but in fact when he did come in the team just days after he looked vastly superior to hibbert at left back, so needless to say there was every reason to think garbutt could do a job there, and with 6 months left on his contract we should be looking to find out while also showing him we a re club that gives youth it's chance. But he chose hibbert instead, was he going to find out that a crap 33 year old right has a future at left back? it was a real signal that this manager sees things in the short term, and given how slow he was to drop one of jags/distin, his obsession with barry and in general his contract policy towards older players, for me this was a real worrying sign.

I had a season ticket when smith did that, this was still the worst individual selection i've seen, hibbert at left back, he barely use the ball on his strong foot, we had an england u-21 ready to go

I'll explain it for you...

Howard is superior to Robles in the same way Coleman is superior to Hibbert.

You know I usually agree with you on stuff mate but not so sure with this.

Howard has, for all his qualities, been really poor this season.

Whether it's bouncing on the line, poor positioning or bizarre diving technique - it seemed that every game he was doing something bonkers that, along with Distin and a lack of cover from our holding midfielders, was costing us point after point.

Robles is looking decent if not still a bit raw. Do I think he's the long term successor for Howard? Probs not, no. But Howard does deserve a spell on the sidelines whilst he cleans up his act.

For me there's a bunch of keepers who would be reasonably cheap to acquire who I think we should be looking to bring in from my experience of them. Shoot me down but I think:

Foster
Butland
Begovic (more on the expensive side)
Vorm
Cech (very expensive obviously)

would all improve us in one way or the other. None are world beaters and have their little faults but each would be an upgrade on Howard for me - and that's a shame because he's been a great servant. He needs genuine competition and fear for his place if we are to see the Howard from last season.

LOL

Maybe in the past but Howard's easily been one of the worst keepers in the league this season. He shouldn't play for us again so we can have fond memories of him.

I'm surprised that you all think Robles is the better keeper.

For me he's only ever had 1 good game for us, against West Ham, and he still let in 2 goals which he should have done more with and then looked like an amateur in the penalty shoot out.

I think everyone was expecting him to be awful for 90 minutes game after game, but because we've tightened up at the back with the return of Stones he's not had to deal with sustained pressure as much and that's clouded people's perception slightly. Howards not had a great season by any stretch but he's still the better keeper, for Robles West Ham performance I would put forward Howards performance against Wolfsburg and him making several good saves that kept us ahead.

I think the injury may have done him some good and gave him time to analyse his game a bit deeper, that and a settled back four should see a return to more solid performances when he returns in my opinion.

If the choice was between a fully fit Howard or Robles for the up coming Derby I take you'd all choose Robles?
