Ha, Jim Melrose, that's a blast from the past. Obviously as a kid I didn't go to any aways, but would always listen to Radio City's 2nd half commentary (another funny thing, they could never do commentary for the full game in those days for contractual reasons - bizarre!) and I remember cursing that name!
Second half commentary, amazing how much you forget,I was lucky I think I missed no more than four games that season and one was Charlton at home cos I was at a wedding in London,it was cheaper then and my eldest rs brother had a slummy jar full to the brim with 50p's and 20p's, he hates the blues and yet paid for me to travel everywhere during the years 1985-1988

Norwich away, just been chatting to my mate, hard to believe we took a crate of warm Newcastle brown from his garage onto the coach and no one even blinked(normal in them days)loved football in the 80s,8 hours on the way home and no one cared

Hey I was there in the main stand...was that the sheeds goal in off the cross bar?
Aston villa???? Oh yes that's the one,the place erupted,my mate got chucked out for swearing and just paid to get back in,he was gone for about two mins

I witnessed a really bad and uninspiring win against UCD in the cup winners cup - little did I know the glory that would follow.

1983-84-85-86-87 what a team that was, some players playing over 55 - 60 games a season (no hamstring injuries)

Great memories, 2 many to mention but here's a few of my favourites from 83-84-85

FAC 3 Away to Stoke
FAC QF Away to Notts County
LC Final Red [Poor language removed]*
LC Final Replay Red [Poor language removed]*
FAC SF Southampton
FAC Final Watford

Drawing 0-0 with UCD at Tolka Park in front of about 9,000 fans, (on the ferry that got turned back)
Won the return leg at goodison 1-0 in front of about 16,000 fans

Graeme Sharp scores against the Red [Poor language removed]* in the Mersey Derby. Best ever Derby goal

Drawing away 0-0 with Bayern Munich in front of 67,000
Won the return leg at goodison 3-1, full house best atmosphere ever

FAC QF Home & away to
Ipswich
FAC SF Luton

Div 1 Home to Q.P.R. Won 2-0 in front of 50,000

Rapid Vienna in the final

FAC Final Man Utd (still celebrating from the wednesday night)

Been checking and one of my mates with me that day said it was called The Stanley Arms before The Sportsman and that does ring a bell

Yes can remember the Stanley Arms

Just had a look on Google Earth (haha proper nerd like!) and seen what that Stanley Arms looks like. I had never been there myself, but it looked great. Proper old school pub with a full length footy pitch in the back yard and swings for kids. They don't make pubs like that any more. They knocked it down about 10 years ago and built houses on the site. This is the before (in 2000) and after (now) photos from above:

The 1995 fa cup was great. I remember buying the sun newspaper on saturday 7th Jan 1995. Centre page said that mystic meg has predicted that the ribbons of winning team would be blue. I did not take much notice of it at the time, but each game we played i did think could it be true. When we beat Spurs 4-1 I could not believe it, we were in the final. Then when we took the lead and Southall stopped everything man tud through at him, was great.

Been hoping now for 20 years, that our name could be on the cup, but it has sadly never happened again.

We will never win the premier league, with major luck, we could get to the final, might win a cup but that is about it. The money gap is too big. We have not won anything for 20 years (been to one final since) - to be honest i cannot see us wining another cup again.

Mirallas is a fine example, he wants champions league football, and we cannot give him that - but we need players like him to try and challenge for 4th place - hard to keep good players. We are now competing with teams like, West Ham & Southamton & Swansea (never mind, man utd, chelsea, man city, rs, spurs & arsenal).

I've forgotten the feeling myself but I think it's round the corner with Martinez in charge.

He's a gambler and sometimes it doesnt come off like his cockup of a pre season and Eto'o, but like last season and Barry it can be gravy times.

We've not got the money to win the league and to be honest I can't be arsed finishing 3-4 and getting tonked in the CL every few weeks. We need to accept where we are at this time and get some pots in the cupboard like the league cup or FA cup.

I seem to recall it took the team a similar length of time. The players told the coach driver to drive slowly.
