Roberto Martinez discussion

To me there are four major issues, of which two are a consequence of the first two.
1 - Distin is playing regularly through injuries to other players. His style is awful; he cant pass or go forward, he slows the pace down, he invariably puts the team in danger or almost restarts an attack as he hasnt the ability/confidence to pass the ball forward. Consequently were putting one step forward/two steps back.
2- Lack of balance on the wings. For gods sake, please lets have a right footer on right wing and a left footer on left wing. Its imperative we get at least one winger in. This will allow us to have a balance in the middle and get our spine back.
3 -We are therefore shorn of any real penetration/momentum going forward and increasingly losing the ball or having a fear of losing the ball.
4 - As a result confidence is low and were not being our real selves. How many times does Barkley need to beat a man, then beat him again, then pass it back or side ways? How many times does Baines need to go back?

Were also hamstrung by having some individuals who on the face of it now not buying into what were asking them to do. Rather than being told what to do; they are given the freedom to do it and consequently not good enough to do it or not able to sustain it. I name Jags, Osman, Distin and Pienaar as the four with Howard waiting on the wings. Hell Gibson is picking up injuries left right and centre now. The spine of the club for the past decade and now too interested in releasing books or contract renewals to actually give the manager their time. I will say it again; look at the amount of games they missed under Moyes compared to how many they continually miss under Bobby. These guys have to want to play of which I believe they dont now.

How many times did Moyes say he asked them to play when they were unfit? How many of them would do it now?

None.
If we are to stick with Bobby then I fear this season is a write off; hopefully he will learn who is right for his methods and who let the man build his team.
On the face of it there is a fantastic basis (of which Martinez must be given credit to acquiring some of or actually harnessing the ability) in Stones, Rom, McCarthy, Barkley, Besic, Garbutt and for what we are led to believe, in Ledson and Galloway. Add to that Coleman, Baines and Mirallas.

I back the man still and really hope he gets through this period. I do however fear a scenario akin to AVB/Moyes at Spurs/Chelsea/Utd.

Had high hopes for this fella after last season; lost all hope in him after the Ramsey goal in EFC EPL match 2 of 2014/15 and he has done nothing since to convince otherwise. He will take us no further than Moyes did; and after all that money spent this season as well.....

Distin has played 12 league games this season and we haven't kept a clean sheet in any of them. In fact we have conceded 26 goals when he has played.

In the 7 games he hasn't played we have kept 3 clean sheets, conceding just 5 goals.

I don't think any more needs to be said about that.

Martinez should've bought adequate CB cover in the summer. That's a mistake on his part but if Stones & Alcaraz are fit for Hull and Jagielka returns soon then I would suspect Distin has played his last game in an Everton shirt.

The manager is far from flawless but I have full faith in him. Get rid of Distin and any other dead wood, replace with hungry players and we will be flying again. Vault me.

You say that but the level Martinez and Moyes took us to is probably the glass ceiling. We're competing with teams who will always out spend us and the problem is that's what football is all about.

Having said that, we shouldn't be languishing round in the bottom half and if that's the case come May then he'll have to get off to a very good start next season.

No pace in the team and our players are playing out of position. Our best performances last year came through direct pacey play eg Barkley Newcastle or Naismith v and lukaku v arse. This year playing slowly and wall passes off Eto'o who is completely out of position in mf/out wide. To be fair to Brenda he has changed the rs system recently and their game is now based on young pacey players and no real no9. Also Roberto buggering off to the World Cup in pre season was a mistake no doubt. I am concerned, we look so stagnant and old.

I was happy that RB took over and he really lifted spirits last year but he has lost the plot this season and it has nothing to do with the glass ceiling but things under his direct control.
We lack pace. Tiki-taki is fine but it has to be interspersed with bursts of speed and quick thinking. Naismith, Etoo, Osman, Pienarr will always nick the odd goal but they are slow and not part of the future. Naismith in particular, for me, is not talented enough.
Team Selection. Like everyone else I am surprised by his team selections. He still has no idea of his best team and will play funny combinations .Barkley,Etoo and Naismith ; Non-wingers on the wing. And please pick a team that plays to lukaka's strenghts.
Confidence. Fergie said that the most important that a manager can give to a player is confidence but RM despite his exaggerated words of praise cannot transmit it.

To be fair, if Stones hadn't been injured at OT and Alcaraz in the Swansea league game, Disdin wouldn't have been anywhere near the first team since the cup tie in Wales.

He is fourth choice at best and is only playing because of the injuries.
