To me there are four major issues, of which two are a consequence of the first two.
1 - Distin is playing regularly through injuries to other players. His style is awful; he cant pass or go forward, he slows the pace down, he invariably puts the team in danger or almost restarts an attack as he hasnt the ability/confidence to pass the ball forward. Consequently were putting one step forward/two steps back.
2- Lack of balance on the wings. For gods sake, please lets have a right footer on right wing and a left footer on left wing. Its imperative we get at least one winger in. This will allow us to have a balance in the middle and get our spine back.
3 -We are therefore shorn of any real penetration/momentum going forward and increasingly losing the ball or having a fear of losing the ball.
4 - As a result confidence is low and were not being our real selves. How many times does Barkley need to beat a man, then beat him again, then pass it back or side ways? How many times does Baines need to go back?
Were also hamstrung by having some individuals who on the face of it now not buying into what were asking them to do. Rather than being told what to do; they are given the freedom to do it and consequently not good enough to do it or not able to sustain it. I name Jags, Osman, Distin and Pienaar as the four with Howard waiting on the wings. Hell Gibson is picking up injuries left right and centre now. The spine of the club for the past decade and now too interested in releasing books or contract renewals to actually give the manager their time. I will say it again; look at the amount of games they missed under Moyes compared to how many they continually miss under Bobby. These guys have to want to play of which I believe they dont now.
How many times did Moyes say he asked them to play when they were unfit? How many of them would do it now?
None.
If we are to stick with Bobby then I fear this season is a write off; hopefully he will learn who is right for his methods and who let the man build his team.
On the face of it there is a fantastic basis (of which Martinez must be given credit to acquiring some of or actually harnessing the ability) in Stones, Rom, McCarthy, Barkley, Besic, Garbutt and for what we are led to believe, in Ledson and Galloway. Add to that Coleman, Baines and Mirallas.
I back the man still and really hope he gets through this period. I do however fear a scenario akin to AVB/Moyes at Spurs/Chelsea/Utd.
