ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Sterling is barely out of nappies and already he's having far too much pressure placed on him from supporters of both club and country

Both sets of fans are so desperate that they are clinging to him as the answer to all their problems. Perhaps in 2-3 years he could be, but at this point he's still practically a bairn and everyone needs to back off and just let him play togger

Not sure why I'm so annoyed by it as you'd think I'd be happy to see Liverpool supporters torpedo the career of such a promising player, but this just doesn't sit well with me, especially now the media is getting stuck into him as well over this "too tired to play" situation.

Full agree Mikey. Very disappointed as well in the behaviour of both his managers who have used him as a a pawn in their own squabble, poor man management by both.

Mediawatch is struggling to see how this is a story. A 19-year-old winger, whose game relies on speed and energy, missed 64 minutes of the win over Estonia after playing a massive 43 matches in nine months. Between January and September 2013, Sterling started just five games for club and country. Given the increase in workload, is it really that difficult to see why he might be tired?

There seems a dangerous mindset in English football that fatigue is a foolish admission of weakness, and that the appropriate response is to maintain a stiff upper lip. Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney are just three examples of those burnt out before their supposed peak, suffering through their status as England's Next Big Thing. Do we really want Sterling to go the same way?

Incidentally, it's a wonderful coincidence that next to Shearer's diatribe is this pithy rating of Leighton Baines's performance: 'Looked bright after being rested'. Well, quite.

Isn't it weird how many pundits and ex footballers simply abandoned everything that they knew in order to agree with Rodgers, that fast players suddenly can't train, despite fast players having trained before and after games for well over a century.

I mean how good could Ronaldo of been had he been able to train throughout the week as well as playing games, being a quick player and that, oh he did, that explains a lot.

Its nuts, papers and radio stations all backing Rodgers over Sturridge, but I think he's taken it a bit far.

Whilst Hodgson may be caving, presenters are starting to gather themselves from their few years of besotted love-ins and actual turn on him over this Sterling thing.

You can push so far, but there is still a lot of loyalty for that England team still, and the more you mess with it, the more the ex England players/turn media mumblers are going to resist even a Liverpool manager that has nearly won something.

I think if he keeps forcing Liverpool subs and dictating training, he'll be seen as he is, rather than how he is perceived at current and that would be hillarious.

43 matches in 9 months is one game every six days btw, not exactly "massive"

Disagree, especially for a young player. For instance Lukaku looked exhausted from a lot fewer games last season before his injury.

Don't think it is just physical tiredness either, he has had an awful lot of pressure put on him to perform for both club and country - think that can take a toll as well.
