Genuine question though, do we actually have too many left-backs atm, Garbutt young with bags of potential and maybe ready to be playing in the prem right now, Oviedo came on leaps and bounds last season until the horrible luck of the injury, and Baines - best lb in the league over the past 4 years...
Serious note here like, team with our finances and needing to add more depth in pretty much most areas, can we justify having 3 players good enough for one lb slot - I know oviedo can play the wing as well but he looks nowhere near as effective and is plainly a natural lb
Guess what i am asking is should a sizeable bid come in for Baines this year, would we and should we fight as hard to keep hold of him, knowing that if he left we would have Oviedo their starting with Garbutt getting a lot more game time as his backup?
Interesting shout that. He's on big wages like.
There's a lot of factors that make him very valuable to us though. Oviedo and Garbutt are both young and relatively inexperienced, so they could do with an experienced left back around. He seems to be good for the dressing room as a whole too, Baines. Also, if Martinez is genuinely thinking of moving Baines into midfield next year and it works, Baines could possibly extend his career (less physically demanding position, in our playing style) and solve the problem of replacing Barry. He's very reliable and the fans love him too.
I can't see a big bid coming in now though. He's contracted and getting on.
Guess it depends on the size of any bids and the possibilities we have once any fee is received. For me personally, the bid would have to be big and we'd have to have a good plan in place to make up for it. Otherwise, I'd be dead against selling him.
Personally love Baines to bits mate, and much like i felt about Arteta for most of his time here, he has been the best thing about everton for a good few years quality wise.
On the cm shift for him though, makes me wonder if Martinez has got the same thoughts about looking at the lb situation and seeing us effectively having to bench someone of starting quality in Oviedo whilst stunting the playing time of a very promising young home-grown lad at the same time, and he is trying to think of how to not lose one whilst getting them both on the pitch at the same time and giving Garbutt room to grow at the club,
Oviedo is more dynamic than Baines and is is more of a direct threat much like Coleman on the other side is and probably does suit the system more than Baines does. But Martinez talks up the importance of the experienced lads massively and can't see him wanting to lose maybe the highest profile one of those.
Guess a lot depends on interest - the home-grown factor is probably the only thing I imagine that would see say chelsea or city coming in for him as think the rs and Arse are sorted on that and United too, Although you'd imagine if that was their main reason to bring him in then they'd prefer shaw at City or Chelsea anyway
Actually a quandary i never imagined this time last season that Martinez has to solve really
Don't think there's any need to try selling our players.
Oveido and Garbutt can play further forward on the left.
Wouldn't be surprised to see one play on the right either to give Coleman a break too.
Particularly if one of them looks like they can use both pegs

Absolutely, and for years previously! Christ, last year I thought Oviedo was championship standard and Garbutt was destined for football league (could still be, I suppose, but didn't look like it tonight, judging by the comments on here), so LOL @ me.
