Luke Garbutt

Given that Baines will have played at the world cup in brutal weather in one of the most physically demanding roles and the medical staff perhaps cautious on overworking Oviedo, I could see Garbutt featuring in quite a few games at the start of the season especially with us being in 4 competitions.

Perhaps Garbutt might be lent out in the Jan window to another premier league team to get game time as we get to the more crunch part of the season and both Baines/oviedo back to peak fitness.

A lot of teams are short on quality fullbacks, thankfully we look to have some great ones - was impressed with Kenny in the England u17 match the other day as well.

Its a very good point you make about players returning from the World Cup. Its usual for these players to follow the WC with a disappointing domestic season...to major examples of players having poor seasons at Everton after a summer of international tournament...Heitinger was never the player he was for Holland when he came to Everton, and going back abit further, Papa Smurf was very poor for Everton the season after being the victim of a bad decision in the Euros. It happens all over the League...this is why we need players who can step in when required next season for Baines, Barkley, Lukaku if we still have him, and even Tim Howard. It will level up the playing field a little, because the top four could all find their players in a slump after the World Cup. It happens a lot. People were saying that last season was our best chance of top four, but I honestly think that next season we could have a better chance, depending on the transfer window.

There's talk here about where to play all of the lads. Has anyone thought of playing them on the right side of our attacking midfield three? It seems that in the modern age, it's the full backs that provide most of the width, as they exploit space provided by the wide midfielders cutting inside.

Might be an option to consider, allowing these lads to cut in on their left foot and have a shot at goal, much as Messi and Henry used to do (not suggesting they're in that league of course)

...delighted with him last night, very impressive. Nice problem for the Manager to have, although I suspect he will use fringe players in Europa League and even in domestic cup competitions.

We will have to wait and see how Oviedo recovers from his injury and how Baibes is after the World Cup , but I wouldn't be surprised next season to see Garbutt on a month by month loan to a good championship side. We could recall him if necessary and another season of playing first team football week after week would finish his apprenticeship as a footballer...and he is going to be a premiership footballer.

Luke played very well last night. Very direct with quick feet. Defensively solid but needs to work on the turn but otherwise a very good prospect.

Iirc Oviedo was used on the right side in one game (when Baines came back from injury and before Oviedo got his) and he looked better there than he did on the left wing. Since he was cutting in he didn't get as tangled up with Coleman as he did with Baines.

Anyone else remember that and if so which game or have I been drinking too much again?

Was the game were he broke his leg

It was the WBA game, the last league game before he broke his leg.

He also played on the right for the second half against West Ham at one point, and played well, nearly scored with a curling effort I seem to remember. Very two-footed, so could work well, recall him scoring a beauty againt Stoke with his right.

He also played their at least once their I think Under Moyes mate at both rb and rw from memory, mind may be playing tricks but have the vague memory of him starting one game in cm under DM as well
