Definatly...im even more saddened that i didnt get to Woolworths earlier...50% off, but by the time i got there (2pm) all the good DVDs and Games had gone :(

Who cares? its a [Poor language removed] shop.

yes, it is just a shop but 30,000 people will lose their jobs when the doors close.

To a lot of old crumblies like me, Woolies is an institution, something from childhood that has now gone.
Everyone has to move with the times but it's still sad.

I guess the sad truth is that despite it being much loved, it wasn't loved enough for people to actually shop there. A bit like when people complain about village shops closing yet they get their groceries from the nearest supermarket.

I think it suffered because it was so versatile. It wasnt as if it sold 1 thing, it sold everything, people like to go to specialist shops to buy things from. Its a sad day when shops this big close. Its a sign of how deep we are in the [Poor language removed].

I owned a village shop once. I thought it would be a good idea at the time. People did exactly as you say. Bastards.

I remember there was a similar trend noted about environmental stuff recently, ie that people said they did an awful lot more than they actually did. Pays to watch what people do rather than listen to what they say I guess :)

Force them, Bruce. BIG GOVERNMENT can do that. Put cameras in every bin in the land.

Seriously, a tax on stuff that is unfriendly is a start. I would also say that you guys in the UK need to take a leaf out of our book, and charge a deposit on all cans and bottles. It's a pain in the arse but at least it forces you to recycle and not just tip it all in the bin.

Then there is the question of power consumption. Dare I say you also follow the Danish example and install windmills on every field in the land? They're ugly but they're clean and safe (unless you're a bird).

wonder if big w is closing as well, imo that is what woolies shouldve gone to instead of remaining on the high st, as the things for sale in the h.st. stores is usually more expensive than elsewhere, big w has more variety like k-mart etc.

It frustrates me that in all the talk of charging for non-recyclable waste that there has been no mention of any financial incentive for recycling.

How hard would it be to say "x is the benchmark we want to hit, if you throw more you pay us, if you throw less we pay you"?

Instead government just does the usual Labour thing and tax, tax, tax to the extent that many people now regard any green tax as simply a way of raising money for other departments. As I said a while ago, psychologists have proven that to get the best change you have to focus on the positive behaviour. "Throw away less and earn money". Simple.

Interesting though that this week (sad to say) Everton fan Andy Burnham has been talking of plans for a movie style rating system for the web to apparently protect our children from watching porn and such forth. Bloody idiot.

he's my mp, he has some good ideas but i think when he did his literature masters at cambridge he may have dropped acid whilst reading 1984 and is now implementing it all,....i.d. cards, rating the web etc etc....congestion charge.
