Kone Signs on 3 Year Deal

Bent's valued at £6-8M, but his wages are £70,000 pw now and no doubt he'd want to increase that with the extra cash knocking about.

Good goal scoring record like, but same age as Kone and he goes through clubs suspiciously quick which sets alarm bells ringing.

I think Villa dropped their big earners (Bent, Ireland, Given and Hutton) in the hope that they would push for a move, which would get them off the wage bill and forfeit any loyalty payment. It looks to have back-fired though because they've got their feet up and carried on picking up their salary.

Sunderland were virtually able to buy Gyan and Sassegnon for the money that they got for Bent. He put in a transfer request amid rumours that he was knocking off Steve Bruce's daughter.

He was always third choice at Spurs because Redknapp preferred the 'little and large' combination of Defoe and Crouch.

He couldn't turn down the chance to move from Charlton to Tottenham and he was with Ipswich for 4 years at the start of his career.

His age and his wages could be factors. I couldn't see us having both Jelavic and Bent in the squad. Maybe a straight swap could work?

so us buying a striker is a good thing...just buying a player for real actual cash without selling first is good. It'd better not be the Fer money though

Where's the Fer money, Bill?

I'm going to say that I'm not really sure that this is the kinda thing we need.

Hold out for a second, I'll explain why right now.

I'm not disputing that we need additional firepower upfront, Anichebe and Jelavic only mustered a measly 16 goals last season (in all competitions) - it's just I don't believe that Koné is the right man to sort that issue out.

Kone is a player who's known for being very much on-off in large parts of his career, failing miserably to do anything during his time at Sevilla and whose workrate was called into question during his spell at PSV.

Sure, he grabbed 11 goals last season at a relegated Wigan Athletic - that's commendable.

But for a player whose pace plays a large part of his 'game', and for us to be spending £5m on a player who turns 30 in November is worrying.

It was installments initially, we never had 8m to spend in one go.

I call that doing the board's work for them.

You and I and everyone else should let them worry about that. If they dont find the cash in future that's needed then it's *their asset* - the one they want to make a profit off - they're devaluing, so let them take the strain they should have been doing all along.

Screw resale value. Too many supporters act like accountants...which suits these bastards down to the ground because they can exploit that conservatism.

I totally agree, but the reason for the current situation isn't really the topic of conversation, it is whether Kone would be a good signing or not. And due to the current financial situation we are in, resale value has to be one of the factors considered if we make a bid for him.

Don't agree with 5 million UPFRONT but if the few whispers of about 2 million up front and then rising to 5 million depending on how many he scores then that would be perfect. We will still have plenty of money to spend this year and if he's a failure we then have lost minimal money, and if he succeeds then he surely will be worth the 5 million! If this is true then its a win win.

Yep, it is pretty much the same as the Baines situation - Martinez will know exactly what price Wigan will accept. And if the rumours are true that he said he only wants to sign for us, then it gives us a very strong hand to offer the fee on our terms

How faint and imperceptible are these 'whispers'? This is the first I've heard of them whatsoever.

I hope this is true. 5M for kone at his age and his ability is too much, it's also dead money which for us is worrying! However 2M with add-ons rising to 5M is a different story. If it doesn't work out we could sell him on in a years time for 2M. If he spends 3 yrs banging in goals and we end up paying 5M then fair enough... Prob still get a 1M or 2 when we let him go if all goes well.

Nathan Dyre been linked now for 5M. This "world wide market" doesn't appear very wide!
