Computer games.

Fuming lads. My PC has been giving me all sorts of trouble the past week or so and it now keeps freezing and rebooting every time i try and play Hitman Absolution (get about 10 minutes into playing and it restarts). Have already tried removing all traces of AMD drivers and installing the most up to date ones but the problem persists. Typical really, i rarely use this machine as i normally play on the 360 or use my laptop.

THIS IS WHY I PLAY CONSOLE GAMES !

I wouldn't mind getting a new racing game. The last one I had was Dirt 2 which I absolutely loved, so I might just get Dirt 3. I like the look of Forza Horizon but I find driving simulator games like that and the later Gran Turismo's a bit complex with all the car setting up and stuff, I'd probably play it for a week before getting fed up.

Dirt 3 is fantastic mate.

Dirt 4 Showdown was a huge letdown.

You mght br overheating. I would recommend opening up your pc and giving it a thorough cleanout.
Especially the cpu heatsink, fan and gpu.

Done all the checks, temps remain low under Furmark and Prime95 respectively. Underclocked my GPU from 900 to 860Mhz core clock and it's working now. Running below stock is annoying but it at least means i can play the game until i have the time and money to replace it.

Re-seat your RAM. How long have you run the Prime 95 stress test? And if underclocking your GPU has fixed the problem, then it sounds like your GPU isn't getting the power it needs. May be worth checking out your PSU and make sure it isn't crapping out slowly.

Could the same overheating problem apply to a laptop? Mine keeps switching itself off and gets roasting hot underneath.

Oh yeah. Most people stick the laptop on the couch. It completely circumvents the cooling. 90% of the vents are on the bottom, so you need clearance between the surface you are putting the laptop on and those vents. It may behoove you to open it up, get a can of compressed air and blow that sucker out.

PSU is a Corsair 500w, and i'm only running a 6870/Sandy Bridge system with everything running at stock, i reckon if it was the PSU then 40Mhz probably wouldn't have made a difference in terms of power consumption. I managed to play Absolution for a few hours with no problems at least, that's the only thing i really use the machine for at the mo so i don't need to worry too much.

Yeah, but if one of the voltage rails is going bad.........

Anyway, Corsair units are pretty reliable and with decent efficiency. You might have something that is undervolting your gfx card. Make sure you don't have one of those bloody overclocking utilities from the vendor running in the background autoloading or anything. (I am only making widespread assumptions, I am sure you would be in control of that brenno :) )

My only other suggestion is to boost voltage a bit to the gfx, then failing that find a friend with a similar card, swap them out and see if you have the same problem.
