Brennan are you still vehement?

*sigh*
The fact that Net Spend is no way to measure a manager's worth was precisely my point.
There is an art in knowing when to sell a player. Of our current squad Jags and Heitinga are probably closest to the 'tipping point' in terms of maximum value. I suppose net spend can't really be used as a guide because Moyes would go out and spend as much money as was made available to him and the main reason that he looks to maximise return on investment is out of necessity. He probably wouldn't sell any of his team if it was up to him either.
I also hate that so much praise is heaped on Moyes for his transfer dealings. Is he practically second to none ? Sure. But how much of that transfer success is thanks to our scouting network ? There's a reason why Newcastle have just given their head scout a nice long contract.

If you look at it objectively everyone knew about Jagielka, Heitinga, Baines, Fellaini, Cahill, Arteta, Pienaar and Jelavic already it was just that Moyes decided to take the plunge. Jags and Baines only wanted to come to us. Pienaar, Arteta and Cahill were measured punts so even if they were no good we wouldn't have lost much. Fellaini and Heitinga were bought when we had money and could have gone either way. Jelavic is perhaps the most calculated signing. Clubs like West Ham had offers rejected and it sounds like it was Weir who eventually persuaded Moyes to put all his eggs in that basket.
Outsiders tend to remember the successes and not the players who he discarded like Bilyaletdinov, Beckford, Yakubu, Van Der Meyde, Johnson, Beattie, Wright, Davies and Kroldrup.
Ace at shopping in Charity shops and finding bargains.
Whole different world to shopping at Harrods.
When he's had money to spend, which is rare, he hasn't done so well. Fellaini is the notable exception. Even Heitinga looked lika waste of money until last season. Maybe that puts the big clubs off him?

What a strange comment.
I guess you would have to clarify what you consider "money to spend", but to call Heitinga a waste of money is, WOW.
If you put all Moyes' signings in order according to how much they cost very few of the ones at the top of the list have worked out. Heitinga did very well last season but before that he was a liability as a defensive midfielder and an expensive back up to Jagielka and Distin.
