2025/26 Charly Alcaraz

I think we saw in his cameo why Moyes doesn't trust him.

We can debate what he should have done in possession, go to the corner, etc, etc, all day and honestly i don't hate what he tried to do in the attacking third.

But for the goal, he absolutely HAS to get out there on Doku. If he does, there's no way he can get that sort of shot off, and we had plenty of guys deep in the box to deal with any sort of pass or chip Doku would have thrown in there. He was in no man's land, doing nothing. His only job there is to get out on Doku and not let him get a free look

Even Bolasie called him out for that on twitter.

I judge footballers on their decision making. Given what he did on the third goal if I was a manager he would never play for me again. Utterly brainless trying to head the ball to Barry when the team is winning 3-2. Simply head it towards the corner flag and chase the ball. Even then he didn't know how to press Doku from the corner.

It's not just him as the team generally lacks basic football IQ. Someone like Rohl would have headed it forwards for himself to chase.
Yes he basically chose the worst possible option

I think both things can be true here.

Moyes not rotating means players aren’t match fit when needed. Likewise - Alcaraz’ game management and intelligence was nowhere near where it should be.

You don’t need match fitness to close a game out or actually press someone about to shoot on the edge of the box.

I'm not sure about that. I'd expect someone playing every week to be more 'alert' than someone who hasnt played for months.

If players are not match fit to play 5 minutes then they should not even be subs. I don't know the situation of each individual and I'm not protecting Moyes as his subs are normally poor but I'm not giving Alcaraz a pass for not knowing what to do with that header.

You can only be match fit if youre playing.

All I am saying is that it makes no sense to throw on subs who havent played in forever against City, in injury time

Alcaraz and Patterson would not have the sharpness that comes from consistent games.

Not really, match sharpness maybe to do with around decision making and composure. General awareness to press or close down? Nah that’s just game intelligence.

2 things can be true, you can sort of see why Moyes doesn't trust him, but he also should have had some more minutes this season, he offers something different. He can take the ball on the turn, carry it and get a shot off.

I hate this whole thing of managers having their favourites, just use the squad we have as effectively as you can.

An attacking midfielder who never plays doesn't recognize danger around his own box. It's not exactly shocking what happened, is it?

He should not have been on the pitch.

Don’t be daft my 9 year old would have tried to stop him having a shot.

Moyes has badly misused his squad, he should though also be able to trust any player to know when to close someone down on the edge of their own area.

Don’t let any anti-Moyes or pro-Alcaraz agenda influence that (the opposite is also true).

I don’t particularly rate Charlie as high as some on here, but I think there are plenty of games that were crying out for him. Same with Rohl, George, Aznou. Dibling is a weird one because I can totally see why he’s not had the opportunities with the way he’s performed when he’s been on the pitch. The others I struggle to see the reason.

This is a bit absurd tbh. He has played before yes? He trains every day?

He should have got out to block the shot.
It’s like if Travers comes on. You don’t say, well you can’t expect him to dive for a shot, he never plays!

I also think he should have had more minutes this season btw.

Yeah this is a bit odd not expecting a player to remember how to play football.

I’m pretty sure I’d have closed him down and I haven’t even played five a side for a few years…

Maybe don't throw on a player with zero match fitness to preserve a lead , Moyes doesn't actually use subs in strategic way , only thinks of it as my starters are tired or injured and I need a body

He played the previous week when we were chasing a goal and I didn't read any dissenting voices then. Maybe asking a footballer to the absolute bare minimum in 5 whole minutes of being on the pitch isn't a major ask?
