2025/26 David Moyes

You`ve only got to look at the Tony Fernades years at QPR, to 100% see that a massive wage bill, definitely does not equate to where you should finish in the league.

It`s how the money is spent, not how much is spent.

ALWAYS an exception to the rule.

20 instances every season....always give or take 1 or 2 placings....and every now and again a whole season may look off.

But its still the only one that's proved most accurate, nobody said it was 100% accurate, ever.

Transfer spending does not predict league placings for the full table....as accurate as wage bill - Thats all anyone is saying.

Its just a league predictor, that's proved accurate, that's it.

The team that comes just after those you listed....is us btw, on all spending and everything, so we should finish 7th.

But we don't....we finish closer to what our wage bill suggests.

Well, actually, the figures I'm looking at say Villa and Newcastle have spent more than us. They're 2 clubs that have been relegated too. West Ham are slightly behind us in terms of spending, but again, they've been relegated.

So it's just a coincidence that the scab 6 make up the 6 highest spenders, and the 4 clubs in places 7-10 also happen to complete the list of the 10 clubs who have spent more seasons in the PL than anybody else?

Let me guess....you are using an arbitrary point to start calculating that spend figure....just so it helps your argument!?!

And what has relegation got ANYTHING to do with this ??

I will say it again.....ITS JUST A PREDICTOR ON LEAGUE PLACINGS....its not a big club calculator, its not even that deep.

I'm not sure why you are getting so upset over it.

At this point you are shouting at the clouds.

I'm not upset about anything mate.

I'm not using an arbitrary point, I'm using the only figures I can find. I can't vouch for their accuracy, but they also give me no reason to believe they are wildly innacurate. https://www.givemesport.com/highest-spending-clubs-premier-league-history/

Whatever made you think I was using an arbitrary point just to help my argument?

Again, I'm not upset about anything. I just think it's flawed and doesn't take in to account the correlation between long term transfer spend and wage bills. I'm sure it can be a not entirely accurate rough guide to where a club might expect to finish, but I'm just saying the long term trends suggest that transfer investment is the main contributor to success, and wage bills generally just reflect that.

Yes - i'm a little bored at work, but I have just done some quick calculations.

If we did 3 league tables based on the bellow, and compare it to current standings - This is how they look.

1. Total transfer spend THIS season - 6 teams currently sit within 3 places of a Total transfer spend table
2. Net transfer spend THIS season - 6 teams currently sit within 3 places of a Net transfer
3. Total wage bill for THIS season - 10 teams currently sit within 3 places of a Total wage bill

This is all anyone is saying....its just a more reflective predictor.

Factoring in Cup success...points deductions...Euro success is different....and the trying to calculate the biggest club or anything more...THIS is not about that.

Best thing you can do here, is type up a list that shows Everton have the lowest wages*, lowest transfer spend and lowest net transfer spend and you might, might just get left alone by the crack pots.

*Maybe show them as being championship level.

Where did I say stop signing young players?

I said to have a balance in the squad. Having a good mix of older experienced players, players in their prime, players coming into their prime and the younger ones with potential. Nowhere did I exclude any section of the football player timeline.

When I see a signing for Everton, I don't consider how much they cost, how much they are earning or how much we might sell them for. I consider, can they win us something, can they add to what we have on the pitch. Don't even consider their age, some of our best signings in my lifetime have been the older players.

As mentioned, it is imperative that a squad has a good balance. You mention Brentford, they bought Henderson. There is your balance, they thought that he could add something to the squad, with no consideration for any sell on fee, it is likely that he will retire there, so they get nothing back. We have done the same last summer, we bought potential, players in their prime years and a older more experienced player (If you can consider Grealish in that category).

At this time, I think we do have a good balance. We can argue whether Moyes is using the squad in a balanced way, but there is a good age range there, with differing levels of experience hopefully helping out the non experienced.

"I have never understood this fixation with playing younger players".
