2025/26 Tyrique George

The player must surely have already agreed terms to allow the club to exercise an option should they want to. Otherwise its not option at all, it's just a potential possibility.

Our only path to the Champions League is winning the game. Take the risk.

….the point is we might have more chance of winning with McNeil starting, that’s the balance. He doesn’t carry the same threat as George in the top third but he’s proved he fits the balance of the team well.

George does look like he can impact games off the bench much more than Dibling, I expect he’ll be saved for that on Sunday. In a way I hope we don’t see him because it’ll suggest we have our nose in front.

Saying that, I do think we’ll see a lot more of George during the run-in.

This is the exact point that infuriates me with the constant Moyes criticism. He obviously sets us up in a way which he thinks is the best way of winning the game. Sometimes that means playing players who are less exciting but stay in shape better. We need to score more goals than the opposition to win. Having players who help to stop the opposition score is just as important as having players who can score. Playing George from the start probably increases the chance that we score first by a tiny percentage given he’ll be playing against fresh legs but in my opinion it increases the chances of us conceding first by a much bigger percentage.

It’s going to be difficult to win the game without scoring two goals and it’s going to be harder to score two goals playing Dwight McNeil.

For reference Liverpool’s last 1-0 loss in the PL was in September of 2024. We need to approach this like scoring goals, plural, is a requirement.

Imo they're there for the taking, and we will stomp them if we just go for the jugular. Their back line is weak, particularly at full back, if we start with two players (George and Ndiaye) who are gonna take their man on every time they get the ball I think it will have them scrambling, get the crowd going, everything we want. Opportunity is there to be positive this time around, I think we should be thinking about how we can hurt them, not how they might hurt us.

Lets see if Moyes goes full Joe Royle on them.

I agree with a lot of this, but am not sure this is the time to start doing something we've not seen at all since Moyes' return.

Sunderland were there for the taking in the cup. Second string team and low on confidence from five matches without a win. Everton chose to sit deep and let them dominate the match from the start. Sunderland and Everton both average under 44% possession in the league this season. But in the cup, Everton's match plan were to let them have the ball. Sunderland had 72% possession the first 20 minutes of the match. At Hill Dickinson.

Yes, there is a chance that Everton will come out with high energy and high press on Sunday. We've seen that in matches this season. Often when it's not expected. But we're not very good at it and don't have the fitness levels that are needed, so we will see the team stop pressing and sit deep from 15-20 minutes onwards.

When Everton defend deep, they defend very narrow in a 442 formation. We give up space wide and invite opponents to make a lot of crosses. With the wide midfielders tasked with both stopping crosses and defend the back post when the ball comes in from the opposite side. We do know that there will be spells in the match were Ndiaye/McNeil/Dibling/George will need to defend and only defend. If they can't defend, they can't play.

Ndiaye used to be very poor at defending, but he works hard and has improved a lot this season. Playing with Grealish and seeing how hard he works off the ball seemed to be an eye-opener for Ndiaye. Unfortunately we haven't seen much of that from George and Dibling. Not yet.

Bookies usually know what they are doing. They have Everton on scoring 1.3 goals in the derby. A number that seems reasonable. There's nothing stopping us from scoring more, but if the match was played a 1000 times, Everton would probably average on scoring just over one goal per match.

Knowing that there's 60-70% chance of scoring 0 or 1 goal, keeping a clean sheet becomes very important. We're not Bayern. Neuer can give away a goal in the first minute knowing his team scores 3.5 goals a game.

With the introduction of five substitutes, using those and finish strong after having replaced half of your outfield players are just as important as having a strong starting eleven. Football has become a squad game. You need game changers on the bench.

And let's be realistic. As much as we all want us the start the match great, the chances of winning if we are 1-0 up after 5 minutes are similar as when the score is 0-0 after 75 minutes. We can't win this match in the opening minutes of the game, but we can lose it.

That would be extremely naive.

More chance of winning or more chance of not losing?
