2025/26 James Garner

I think some Evertonians are getting carried away with Garner's overall ability.

He has had a very good season so far in the context of our season, and has proven himself to be a very valuable squad player as well as first team member due to being able to slot in at RB as well as in the midfield.

But he isn't a great player. He can't run a midfield and he's nowhere near being top 6 standard or international standard either.

Would be good to extend him given his versatility but if we lost him it wouldn't be the end of the world.

No I think some Evertonians are getting carried away with their overnight dream.

We have glaring spots in the team that need addressing now.

Garner isn't one of them.

Progression is a gradual project, not an overnight project.

it's just crazy talk of looking beyond the now, and next step.

Its like preparing for the Spurs game, when we have chelsea on saturday.

I'm not sure i've seen anyone say we shouldn't extend the contract. There is a completely different - and totally rational - point being made by some about how they hope we're not giving him a blockbuster new contract of the type we would give to a major new signing or a player like Branthwaite, because they aren't convinced he's of that level and feel like it may turn into a millstone if we're looking to progress, but I don't think anyone's saying they'd rather we let him go on a free.
While it used to be more prevalent, in the last week alone weve seen "Would hope we move on" and "let him go and get the most you can for him". Getting pennies for him is the same to me, until we have better players its suicidal to move out your performers because someone is enamored with someone else whos never played here(a lot of that in this thread).

Solid premier league player.

Nothing more, nothing less.

…..his versatility shouldn’t be underestimated, players who can not only fill a number of positions but fill a number of positions very well really add value to a squad.

He’s only 24, he’s really developed and improved under Moyes, he’s being spoken of in terms of an international call-up and might not have hit his ceiling yet.

I made the comment i hope we move on from Garner, but that wasnt advocating selling him mate, more moving on from relying on him.
