Dogs

Anyone here manage more than one dog on their own? I’m basically flying solo (my daughter doesn’t count, cos she’s chronically online 😅).

I’ve got the chance to take in a bonded pair, which would bring us to three dogs total…though our current senior mostly just naps 99% of the time. Yeah, I’ve thought about time away from them and have arrangements for dog-sitting and professional care.

I just want to know: is managing multiple dogs alone as challenging as I imagine?

I do not have a dog.
Don’t see the point of them.

I have better things to do than constantly take the damn thing out for walks so it can empty itself, and personally, I don’t like the idea a walking around with little sacks of dog poop in my pockets.
They are just unhygienic, and yes, I am aware that dogs probably think the same way about me.

Fair play to you if you think you can manage it Bry. That's one Hell of a lot of responsibility and hard work though. Not sure I could manage it.

Are we taking big dogs, or the smaller breeds, Bry?

@Bryan+ are you considering taking on a pair because your current senior is actually quite senior indeed and you are looking to soften the blow that could be on the horizon? It'll be a significant change and a lot more work, they'll need your care even when you don't have it in you, it's mid winter and raining and they'll be a chore. If you get a bit lax are you likely to hate yourself for not doing as much as you feel you should through guilt? Big responsibility, have you the time and energy for three?

Great contribution as ever, Neil. Interesting you don’t like the idea of sacks of poop in your pocket though. Considering the amount of poop you post here.

Well spotted mate. Yes - little bit, but not the entire decision, I have zero problem getting out in all weathers. Always on the move and actually enjoy it. Keeps me bones warm - so to speak. It’s practically impossible to keep dogs indoors unless it’s very wet and they refuse to move. I’ve had dogs all my life but never more than two at a time.

Pair of miniature dachshund
Smaller breeds are easier to manage, Bry…

But from my experience with Dachshunds, my aunty has one, and they’re a very needy breed, as in, they’ll want to be around you all time, and they’ll want constant attention.

Expect them to whimper and make noises if they don’t get what they want.

But they’re an indoor breed, so if you don’t mind them being around you and under your feet most of the time, then it’s ok.

They have a miniature dachshund 3 doors down from me (just 1 but it yaps enough for 2 or 3), when they take it out it doesn't walk very far, rarely past the grass verge outside my house 💩. It then returns home for a rest. Not the most energetic of dogs.

Nightmare to blaze a joint when you’ve got two of them on a lead. Other than that it’s sound. You feel a little less guilty going out knowing they have company.

Yep. Our current dog is a smaller breed. Piss easy to deal with. I’m very familiar with Dachshunds too, they are my favourite breed.
Would they need multiple walks per day? That’s one of the harder things I’d imagine because you’ve always got to be up for it.
I’m fine with that. I’m out at the crack of dawn and another in the evening, generally need about 1hr between them, the elder can do about 15mins the minis can usually go until you stop, I’ve had one out for 2/3hrs in the past.

Sounds like poor dog owners to me, most dogs bark for a few reasons - vocally alerting their owners to something or boredom.

Not really, it barks at everyone and anything that moves, whilst it's out.
