Priorities - the league or a tilt at silverware?

What should Everton focus on this season?

No, but prioritising a cup over a league is very common and unless your class is hard to balance. Just look at United and Spurs last year when they realised they might win a cup.

Also not saying we’d get relegated either going for one but there is definitely an enormous lack of walk before you can run in this fanbase.
Thanks for the reply.

I'd like to think we are now capable at least of a bit of light jogging with the odd sprint!

It's interesting if you talk to other fanbases , recent trophies are always a source of pride connected to banter but look at Leicester they won a FA less than 5 years ago and I don't think a lot of people outside of Leicester fans even acknowledge it , with them being in obscurity due to their poor recent epl form putting them in the Championship. I think a cup can be a joyous development but it's such a gamble other than few notable exceptions the cups usually go to a sky six teams. I think premier league form should be a priority but the caveat is that you have to build reoccurring top half finishes or it's just considered a blip. If you can cement yourself as a perpetual top half team I think it actually improves the chances of winning a cup or reaching the finals
Getting to a final is irrelevant. I remember this quote from kendall after 1984 final, "We came here to win the final; Watford came to enjoy the day."

It's amazing all your examples are negative! No mention of cup winners, Birmingham (finished 9th in the league that season), Swansea (finished 9th) and Palace (finished 12th).

Did they prioritise the cup over the league those years? I don’t remember. I also never said every team that does it, is a relegation risk.
Well, clearly they did, it didn't happen by magic. Let's be clear, your frame on the argument was negative (it's very hard to do it unless your class) and where did I say that you said it was a relegation risk?!

Honestly? Priority is 1st get into europe. Then a cup run. The big issue we found recruiting this past window was the quality players didnt want to come here because of a lack of europe. We cant realistically make any cup run, or compete higher up the table, without those better players. We cant get those better players without europe. In my opinion, 8th place is the gateway to winning a cup or having long term success in the league. It doesnt make that happen, but its almost impossible to achieve that without it. Palace aside, it is an unsurprisingly low number of 9-20th place team who have won cups in the past 30 years.

League is top priority.

Not far behind is the FA Cup, which mostly takes the place of league games and doesn’t require a lot of rotation. You don’t have to make tradeoffs to make a good fist at that competition. If Moyes put out that team from the other night in R4 of the FA Cup and they went out I’d be fuming.

Not arsed about Carabao and never will be.

Bizarre perspective when we haven't won a trophy for 30 years.

Hilarious that you think they are mutually exclusive. If our history in the 80's shows anything its that having a good cup run to the final and ulitimately winning a trophy helps breed success. Even when we won the cup under Royle the good cup run helped us in the league.

Yeah I didn't really mind the squad that was put out the other night, I was more surprised at how poorly they performed. This team is fresh off years of relegation battles, I could honestly give less a damn about some league cup at the moment. I love watching cup games too, but the importance just isn't there, we need to be consistent in the league and hopefully fight for euro spots in the coming years. I completely understand frustration over our current predicament but this takes time. Right now I just want to finish higher in the league than we did last year. Cup runs would be a bonus but nothing more IMO.
