I don't think it's that unlikely we see him join nearer the deadline. Moyes likes him and I don't think he's in Leeds plans. If we miss out on our main targets I can see it happenning.

Moyes literally binned him for not having enough (any) end product - how is that liking him?

CM is just as big an issue as RW. Armstrong has promise but needs to be eased in gradually. Garner is meh. Iroegbunam is interesting in possession, useless without it. None of them should be starting in a team with aspirations above a relegation dogfight.

One signing changes the dynamic of the team i think mate.

I think a quality right winger before the start of the PL cheers everyone up and does a lot of heavy lifting in balancing the squad.

The rest will come, but id suggest that is mission critical ahead of the start of the PL.

Absolutely, 2 signings with more later and the team looks a lot different. It is not ideal, far from it, but will happen.

Aiming high was/is the right thing to do - waiting around for their answers not so.

I would still rather aim high and get good players in late than aim lower and get average players in early.

A happy medium would be ideal

Waiting round for answers isn't even really the issue, the issue is not being able to convince them to come. Players will obviously want the best outcome for themselves and setting arbitrary cut off points just isn't really realistic in these type of negotiations, but you would hope that at least a few of the players would have been swayed by what we had to say/offer and so willingly sign up without waiting round for ages. It's the fact that we haven't managed to get anybody to do that that concerns me.

Yeh, there must be stuff going on that we do not know about. It seems we are not an attractive prospect as we think BUT. we have to aim high - Forest and west Ham and Tottenham are all aiming for similar players to us, if we sack that off and aim lower and they get the better players we will regret it for a long time. The bottom line is we need another 3 or 4 minimum to have a competitive squad.

They can't afford to hedge their bets on getting them later in the window and need to offset that risk by getting a couple in by the Roma game.

At this stage that means no more waiting on Luiz, McAtee etc, or at least on some of them. Get a couple in now that want to be here.

Get two done in the next week and then if the waiting game plays off, fine, for any of the preferred targets that are left. We should be looking for loans on top too.

But isnt that accepting you are signing players of a lower quality or lower down your list then the ones you may have in cross hairs right now - its a risk assessment really.

Id be inclined to hold the tension, ultimately its probably about three players of quality that are coming into the starting team - with he rest being squad options, right winger, 10 and centre midfielder - there will be fillers. But i dont think its mission impossible - to wait for high quality additions we have earmarked for the starting team at this point in the window mate.

Understandable when we had £0. Villa wanted him too, for the same reason - he was available for just a wage.

But on attainability "you cant force players to sign, shrug", surely part of recruitment is identifying players who'd be willing to come?

To be fair to Thelwell, at least he went for players who wanted to come though, like Kudus an Gnonto who were going on strike to force the move. Kudus would have come on loan if Man Utd hadn't took Antony. We were always just hoping the club would let them go for less than what we could offer, or players would leave - like Calvert-Lewin when we wanted Minteh.

If we could afford £30m in January, or Calvert-Lewin went to Newcastle - Minteh would be an Everton player an the right hand side would be sorted.

The only one we really tried for, who jibbed us an didn't want to come was Elanga, because of Dyche.

It's why I've been like a stuck record saying if it was my club, I'd have kept Thelwell/Purdy an give them a go with money. I worry TFG have tried to do too much, too soon.

I don't think it was wrong to target ambitious top players early in the window and it will still be worth it if we secure even one of them.

But if this strategy has failed (which seems to be the case), then we need to start adjusting our targets and going for more attainable (but worse) players.

You've always got to have a plan B.

We’re not gonna sign a centre back for August though are we? Tarkowski Branthwaite will be back as the 2 by end of August/september. What’s the point signing someone to get splinters.

We’ve got gaping holes elsewhere, just gonna have to make do with keggers for another year.

Here's an idea, why don't we sign a RB, a position we've been woefully short at for years now, and then O'Brien can play at CB and Keane can do some sudoku or something?

I actually think a few have been willing and we haven't closed out the deals, either with clubs or players.

Im full sure we know what it would take to say get McAtee over the line and haven't done it.

That's why i think Moyes is annoyed.

I think this is fair comment, to your yesterday comment. Largely, and this isnt bedwetting, coz i dont really care too much about overprivaledged boys kicking a bag of wind about, whilst the change was needed, part of me thinks he did a decent job in v trying circumstances. It leaves me wondering, not if we're good enough, but have we the numbers enough to compete a full season, without struggle. End of the window will be the judge of that, but, im not sure right now. I really dont think we have the quality or numbers, not close.

If we're being brutally honest, if you're an exciting young player in Europe, Everton are probably pretty low on the list of clubs you want to play for.

Historic and new stadium etc, but we've been rubbish for years and have a reputation for playing ugly boring football. That's just the reality.

I don't see how you convince a player by selling them a dream, you do it by paying them massive wages.
