you don't need backup for the wings when you have players who can play in interchangeable positions along the frontline

Ndiaye, Alcaraz and McNeil can all play LW, CAM or RW if required

if you therefore sign players of a similar ilk then you don't need to specifically target a right winger specialist or a left winger specialist or a central attacking midfielder specialist you just need someone who is capable of playing anywhere along the front line

most of time players switch wings during the game anyway

None of those three really are comfortable on the right. All of them prefer to play on the left rather than right.

Keane as #4 with a reasonable wage is sensible. Much better than spending 10 million in that position. It would be some older player in any case, no young player is going to want that place.

We need someone rapid to play in one of the wide forward/wing positions, and someone who can get to the byline and cross it, just so we have variety.

Or we need two fast as wind full backs who can put a cross in from the same byline position (but also can defend).

Because without that threat of getting wide and crossing in, our play is predictable, the oppo stays compact within the width of the 18 year box and we have to thread the eye of a needle to create a chance.

Oh, and if Keane signs that's CB sorted for the season and we can dismiss all these Wharton etc. links.

….i think it’s a very sensible, pragmatic piece of business if true.

Terrific start to the month if we get Branthwaite, Gueye and Keane on new deals and acquire Barry.
Yup, and other than the game where he came on completely cold against city and was a bit of a mess (but a bloody hard ask for anyone), the games he started last season Keane was by and large fine.

Anyone who is a significant upgrade on Keane isn’t coming to Everton to be 4th choice CB.
