2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

He hasn't improved in areas he needed to improve. Can he function alone up top and provide a goalscoring threat? No. I feel like that is the type of striker we need right now and he isn't it. He may find success at a squad that can provide service. What I have seen is his on ball skills are too weak to be throwing silly money at.

I thought there was a thread to discuss mental health.

This is about Dom the footballer, with his poor scoring record, should we try to re-sign him or not?

Depends on the wage really.

Yes if it means he's there for a squad depth.

No if it means it stops us going for another striker - because he isn't reliable enough.

Take out the games he's missed through injury and the games he's trying to control the ball as it's smacked over his head. Not that long ago that he was Kane's understudy for England. I'd rather he stayed here and found his way again than did it somewhere else.

Stats were put up before. 45 starts in the last 2 years and he hasnt reached a combined total of double figures from open play. You cant gloss over that. 3 goals last year and 5 goals the year before. What club with even an ounce of hunger and ambition accepts that from a striker.
The England thing was 5 years ago for a few months. Michael Keane was once understudy to Englands centre halves.
I mean theres clinging on and clinging on.
The last game of the season at Newcastle was a timely reminder why we just have to move on. Put clean through and i reckon 95% of Everton fans knew he wasnt scoring that. Thats why he scores 5 goals a season. Not injuries or Dyche. Because he isnt a good finisher.
Ive got to be honest im very surprised now that any Everton fans want to persist with him being up front. I dont know what they see.

I like DCL as a person. I think he cares about football. I do think he puts a lot of pressure on himself to perform doesn't just cash a paycheck. I have no issues with him personally.

But we should not re-sign him because

1) He's injury prone with the type of injury that commonly recurs. There's immense risk there
2) He's more a "footballer" and not a "striker". We need strikers that first and foremost score goals. Whether it's mental, putting too much pressure on himself, or any number of reasons, he's proven he's not a good finisher.

From a personal standpoint, I really do hope he goes elsewhere and figures it out. But I just don't think that it should be with us. I think it's a change of scenery will benefit all parties situation
I agree. He seems like a decent guy, but all the pressure and tension has spilled over a bit in the last year or so, and even without that, things have gone a bit stale for him here. He's been at the club for 9 years- how many players spend that long at a club nowadays? Especially if their not really regarded as fan favourites like Seamus or Pickford are.

Going elsewhere would be best for him, and for us too. If he re-signs I think things are just going to keep going the same way, with him down the pecking order and the fans getting frustrated with him.

Does it matter?

He loves his wife now, and all?!

Hanging’s too good…

How dare a man publically praise his wife. What a horror!

Won’t do him any favours with some of the angry old men on here, but I’m not sure that really matters?
Magic like that beautifully illustrates the madness of footie fans. Seeking outrage everywhere.

Remember Heitinga being asked about playing for Barca? RAAAAAAAAAAGH.

Lukaku about his ambitions? RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH.

DCL about his wife? RAAAAAAAAAAGGH.

You mean, England’s centre halves were understudy to Michael Keane? He was the secret weapon just waiting to be unleashed!

And he feels underappreciated by Everton supporters. Beggars belief really.

Pretty much anyone suggesting we keep him is about keeping him as an option with either a new starting striker brought in, or Beto being number 1.

It’s not as if people are suggesting he stay as our first choice.

Personally Im more than happy to keep him if we sign a new first choice. I also want to keep Beto and want Chermiti to go on loan. So that would rely on him being happy being 3rd choice/fighting it out with Beto for 2nd choice which I can’t see happening.

Is there anyone saying that? Or are people saying sign a new first choice or use Beto as first choice and keep him as an option?

I see very very few, if any, suggesting he stay as our starting striker.

If DCL is fit, he won't want to be our second striker. If he's our second striker, we can't rely on him to stay fit.

Not sure what the benefit of keeping him is.

It's that really. We can't rely on him to be our first choice and we can't rely on him as second choice either.

I think most have mentally moved on.

Can people on both sides forget all this nonsense off the pitch, whether he did or didn't wear a skirt, what his missus is like. Only thing we as fans should care about, is he isn't a natural striker, he missed 2 great chances at Villa Park and missed a sitter against Villa at GP. He had a brilliant chance vs Newcastle and missed that. We simply can't afford to have a player, who misses half of season through injury and misses chances that Beto would score easily. Would DCL have scored Betos goal against RS? I don't think so.
