….don’t fret, Vintage, if he doesn’t sign there’s plenty more strikers out there

Us veterans of the Riquelme, Joao Mountinho, David Neves, Alan Smith, etc. etc. saga’s know this feeling well.
Don't think the Joao Moutinho saga will ever be matched again on here. What a thread that was.Us veterans of the Riquelme, Joao Mountinho, David Neves, Alan Smith, etc. etc. saga’s know this feeling well.![]()
Don't kid yourself , this is Everton.Don't think the Joao Moutinho saga will ever be matched again on here. What a thread that was.![]()
Very true. Problem is midfielders cost you money. After strikers and wingers (which we haven't had glut of great ones over the last 30+ years either) they're probably the next most expensive part of assembling a team. And we've only had money sporadically. When was the last decent midfield we had in all seriousness? I feel like we say this all the time.
McCarthy and Barkley have sorted our midfield for the next decade here - they would both be gone within a few seasons
Gueye Schneiderlin and Klaasen will work for Koeman - it was probably the worst midfield I’ve ever seen
Gueye Gomes Siggurdson is the one under Silva - it wasn’t
Allan Doucoure James will be brilliant under Ancelotti - one of them was
Garner Gueye Onana Irogebunam have been different shades of average.
I can’t remember the last time we genuinely had a good midfield. Maybe 13/14 when McCarthy Barry Barkley went well together.
Even before that you’re probably going to 10 years before to Carsley Gravesen Cahill before you get a combination that you could rely on to play well together most games.
Considering some of the partnerships we’ve had at CB during this period it really has been a poor show for top class midfields.
Those Chelsea players must have hated winning a European Trophy this evening, just 4 days after qualifying for the Champions League - imagine they're kicking themselves at their choices.
Not really arsed either way on Delap but just find it weird he would chose Chelsea. With Jackson being a better striker and them rumoured to be in for Ekitike too) He banking a lot with a club that seems like a bit of a graveyard for players that don’t end up clicking straight away in the team.
I'm already bored of Delap - where's our next Belgian at ?
I think if we don't sign Delap, we won't necessarily prioritise a striker. In the position we're in, it has to be a case of the best players we can convince to join, whether that's in midfield, up front or even full back. If we could sign an amazing left back for £40 million it would be worth it as we could transform the way we play. We can't offer European football or the chance to play with amazing players, or even a renowned manager, so we have to take the best we can get who will join us.
I'd be surprised if we are in a position to be taking mid table teams best players on big fees to be honest.Personally, I'd be overjoyed if we managed to get Mbuemo for 50 - 60 million. At 50 million, he'd cost just a bit more than Anthony Gordon cost the Barcodes, but he'd provide double the output! It's also the same price that we sold Onana to Villa, and he could barely even get into the crappest Everton side in living memory.
You can't be in favour of spending 30 million on Delap, and then cack yourself over the prospect of paying 60 million for Mbuemo imo. Mbuemo offers much better value for money!

Always feels like we've had one player, but never the full set of 2/3 in centre mids of the same quality.

Theres a number of positions we need to strengthen
For me, a CM & a RW would really move the team on, moreso than a CF.
The worry is that we spend the summer chasing players who are never going to join us. If that did happen given our lack of numbers we really would be behind the 8 ball (that's the phrase by the way Davey) at the start of the season.Theres a number of positions we need to strengthen (obviously).
It all depends on whether we are going to spread the capital across everything or (as were seeing with Delap) we have the ability to go for one or two £30mil+ players.
