2024/25 David Moyes

Is it controversial to say I think it would be a wasted opportunity to not try and get someone better in the summer? I know we aimed for the stars and ballsed it up under Moshiri, but there seems to be a big opportunity to kick on now, and as much as I love Davey, the last couple months haven't been great have they?

I know it's a hell of a lot better than ginger snotball as far as the feeling around the club, and the footy has been a bit better, but is there a glass ceiling? Or would we take 12th next season?

This isn't a Davey Out post or anything, just putting the GOT feelers out there.
Define better.

I think it would be a huge mistake to take that kind of risk.

The word is stability. People say he has a ceiling and I fully agree with this, but to break through a ceiling you have to get there first. You can't just chuck stuff from the floor hoping that it will break.

Moyes left us last time with a great chance to break through but it was ballsed up. Hopefully we now have some savvy owners who will allow Moyes to be able to reach the ceiling and have a succession plan if we do.

That's the big question I guess, what are our goals for next season? I think the summer spend defines that, there's so many moving parts currently. Can Moyes get us into Europe like his first stint by signing some gems like Cahil, Arteta, Baines n co?
He got West Ham way above their station into Europe three years on the trot (winning a pot to boot), so I’d hope so!

I think we can be better. But we have to see who is available. There are many many bad managers we can sign. At least I know Moyes is decent with the potential to be better if the right squad (Sorry @JobForTheMoyes) is built for him. I remember Farhad had this weird obsession with Koeman and who knows what crap the Friedkin's may bring in. We really need a good DOF to turn it around

The last few games haven't been perfect by any stretch but in the space of 3 months Moyes has given us a playing style, a philosophy and a purpose as a club that Dyche just didn't. I was never a big fan of him coming back and I was completely wrong. He's not the manager that will win the league (I don't think so anyway) but he's the manager that will get you mid table, cup runs, European runs and will find gems in bad teams or unexpected places.

People that say Moyes is a defensive manager can’t have watched much of his first stint. There were times where it was necessary, but how was it defensive having Baines, Pienaar, Arteta, Yakubu, Fellaini, etc marauding about?

It did take time to get the necessary quality to boss games, but he was building from a low point, much like he’ll be trying to do now.

Fact is, the football you can play comes down to the personnel you have at Blue disposal.

It's more that he's cautious. Go a goal up and his instinct is sit back and protect it. Happy to settle for a draw rather than push for a win.

Dyche is a defensive manager that plays horrible football. Moyes can play good football.

Goals for next season... I'd guess top 10 and a decent cup run. Any European qualification would be a massive bonus, but I guess that has to be the target to aim for. The scale of the rebuild and the move to the new stadium will cause disruption, but for me, taking that into account, progression would be a solid top 10 finish with 50-60 points, then aim to kick on from there.

New manager doesn’t stop these kind of winless runs happening with these players. As you have said, an opportunity to kick on means possibly buying better players so maybe once that’s confirmed we could think about it, if Davey isn’t moving us forward

Moyesy has apparently signed a 2.5y deal.

Assuming that his pitch for the job included aiming to replicate his success and win a European trophy within that timeframe, they are hardly going to bin him off unless it’s abundantly clear that we are way off course.

We have a largely unchanged playing staff, most of whom are offski imminently.

A tough April against the best sides in the league is a footnote at this stage.

He’ll be judged on how next season goes.

Not controversial at all. Some would say pragmatically ambitious.

Of course, it all hinges on the ability of the Friedkins to execute such a plan successfully. They would need excellent judgement and the new man to prove himself quicky.

To be fair, one could, ironically, argue they have already done that with their replacement of Dyche with Moyes.

They need to repeat the trick now if replacing Moyes is to be a successful move, because as much as I would like to see them put their original Plan A into action, it is not without risk.

There is no official communication that he has signed a 2.5 year deal.

The club never announced that. They did for Lampard and Dyche, but the duration of Moyes's contract was never, to the best of our knowledge on here, publicly communicated.

We commented on this at the time and thought it peculiar...

I did say apparently - as obvs this fact has given some small hope to those who would like to see him go in the summer.

That said, multiple media outlets have reported it and the club has not moved to correct them either.

It's plausible that the club might encourage that deliberate ambiguity...

Oh, for sure it's not an oversight. But as to the precise reasoning why they would or would not do that, we can only speculate.

It seems to be a TFG thing, as Roma it seems did not announce the length of the contract in the cases of de Rossi (initially) or Jurić; however they did for Mourinho and de Rossi subsequently.
