Travel thread 3.0

Last time we were in Tenerife we got the bus to the capital, Santa Cruz, and wandered around for the day. Well worth a visit and so different from what we were used to in the west and north of the island.
A friend of mine also recomend Costa Silencio, which is quite near the airport, but has a nice coastline and is a quieter resort than those further up the west coast.

Booked for Croatia this summer. Never been, any beer or food I have to try? Or must see places near Split?. Cheers in advance 👍
Krka National Park is worth a visit, went there last year on a tour - impressive waterfalls and very pleasant boat trip along the river to a nearby town (cannot remember its name) where we stopped for a beer and a sandwich. Almost all the beer I saw was lager, mainly Karlovacko and Ozujsko, both of which were palatable (for a non lager drinker)

Are you with kids? How old? We first stayed in el Medano it is right next to the southern airport (you dont really hear the planes) but it is a 5 minute taxi and great for the first night or two while you get your bearings. It is a spanish town mostly, few English and loads of great Spanish eateries for Spanish people. We really liked it there. Hired a car from an Argentinian guy called Henry - he was also excellent and even drove us to the airport on our way home. I can give you his company deets if needed.
We booked a hostel in the north - the nature reserve/national park, beautiful an rugged, mad roads up twisty mountains. If you do this - stipulate your own room or you end up sharing - not keen, not with kids.

Then stayed a few nights in a weird town on the other side of the island - cannot remember name, was not all that. Then back down to the tourisyty bit - Adeje - not as big as the the main drag areas but still pretty touristy and Britih pubs, food etc. We did have a laugh and basically got pie-eyed every night when we were there. It has the Siam Park water park - the best in the world they say. Had an excellent day the but gets mad queues etc on weekends and school hols.

It isnice to have the two extremes, hostels then brits on the piss, kind of makes you appreciate both!

Thanks for the reply. It's just the two of us, no kids. I'll want maybe the Friday or Saturday night with a few beers in a relatively busy part if we can. Other than that will be either relaxing or seeing a bit of nature. Will look into the reserve

Was told about leaving late at night one night to go up the volcano. Park as high up as possible then hike up. You get to see the night sky clearer than most places in Europe and then see the sunrise. Not sure on that tho as I'm not the one driving.

We went two thirds of the way up the volcano (Teide) -it is an amazing landscape, the black lava and weird gorges etc. We intended to get the cable car up the top and walk down - it turns out you need to book well in advance. Defo worth going early as it gets busy, every lay by and car park are crammed with walkers from mid morning. It gets very cold - weird when sat in the sun down below but the mountain is higher than the ski-resorts of the rest of Spain. Basically, we totally underestimated the scale of it all!

Let us know what you got up to when you get back

Have been up Teide once, by cable car. When we got in the car we were joined by a number of other tourists including one German gent in tennis gear. The rest of us wrapped up in our winter coats etc just looked at each other, and waited... When the doors opened this bloke went out, turned blue and dived back in again, visibly shivering. Everybody else had a most enjoyable time :D

HAHA, he must have been mad (stupid). We saw people going up there who looked like polar explorers!

I was in Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik last year. Hate to break it to you but the best places (IMO) were in and around the other two 😬

Split was still really nice, I would recommend doing one of the many boat tours on offer - you get to see some incredible islands. The Roman ruins are also great, but if there is a cruise ship or two in the harbour you are best to do it early morning or late afternoon when the crowds have died down a bit.
There is a cool rooftop bar right on the harbour - only a 2 storey building but you still get a great view and a refreshing beer/cocktail while lounging on a large daybed.

The hill next to the harbour is worth a climb if you are able - great views over the Adriatic and there are plenty of local small bars at the bottom although they do tend to be quite pricy.

I love Croatia. Split is fascinating, and historic -Diocletian's Palace, and one of the oldest Sephardic synagogues in Europe is there. You must try to get to Dubrovnik - Game of Thrones territory but spectacular buildings and sea views. A trip to one of the islands is also a treat maybe Korcula... https://www.korculainfo.com/travel/split-korcula/

Zadar is beautiful, quiet, very historic, and much less touristy.

TBH I can't think of any stand-out beers - my memory is that they were cold and wet and did the job on very hot days.

Split is great, been a few times, but not since it's been part of the Euro.

The main harbour is beautiful, and you may well be tempted to do a few islands whilst you're there. Hvar will get pushed, but when I was there in 2018 (got a bar to show Everton - Ruzomberok - 😂), I was getting charged mad prices for everything like £10 a bottle of beer. So just be mindful of that.

Atlanta is an amazing place.

Other than being the best place for Chicken in the States, it's just great fun. The one of the 3 I'm the most jealous about.

If you get adventurous and get a car, Georgia itself is an amazing state.

Yeah we’ll be getting a car to get to and from things, but think we’re saving a bit of the exploration for next time - mainly because I want to drive to Augusta and it’s basically shut down over the summer 😭
