Travel thread 3.0

Have given info about Antalya, Side & Alanya when replying on the Iran thread. I note you have been to Oludeniz, Hisaronu, Ovacik, Fethiye area, and also Dalyan. You do not fancy Marmaris but along the coast is a smaller resort called Turunc which is pleasant. From there you can take day trips to Icmeler & Marmaris, but also to West to small beaches particularly Kumlubuk. Further along, and further from the airport is Datca, supposedly the cleanest air in Turkey and a very pleasant place to stay and explore. We tend to stay n a resort 3 or 4 days and then move on. From there you can get ferry to Bodrum and explore the Bodrum peninsula, my favourite spot is Turgetreis which may well be worth researching as it is a small town with everything most people need for a good holiday. I have visited, and explored Turkey many times, if you need any more info, just ask.

Last time I was there it peaked at 47 degrees one day …. I honestly thought I must died in my sleep and gone to the burning fires of hell
We started in Fetiyeh , had an afternoon in Olu Deniz on to Antalya then back to Marmaris , Bodrum, Kusadasi , 2 nights on Kos that caused ructions with the Greek harbour police and three nights in Istanbul. Antalya was the hottest, you had to hop/dance across the beach the sand was that hot,we gave up in the end and sat in some bloke’s cafe eating watermelon and playing cards. That cafe and the heat are my abiding memories.

I was in Hisaranou when it hit that heat. Weirdly though, the hottest sand I ever tried to walk on was in Lanzarote.. a famously breezy island… that sand was like hot coals

Oh Ive been to the George Payne but probably only 3 or 4 times in the last ten yr. Wouldn't be able for those monstrosities.

Milk is a good spot, with very good food and I think at least one of the owners is Irish. Pennybangers a great bar nearby.
They had another place according to the wife called marmalade that we went to that was very nice too.

She lived out there for a year so had me around some of her favourites.

Pamukkale is well worth a visit if you haven't been there from Oludeniz. Even more so, Konya, which is also inland and the home of the dervishes (as in 'whirling dervishes', a branch of the Sufis).
Me and the Mrs did a sunrise hot air balloon in Pamukkale on our anniversary last year, followed by a walk through the ruins and the travertines until sunset.

Was a fantastic day and would highly recommend

The ruins (Hieropolis) are one of my favourite ancient sites in Turkey, personally I preferred them to Ephesus - not least due to the large number of cruise ship visitors that do the Ephesus tour most days.

Yeah, I think I preferred Hieropolis too. We made the good decision to start at the North gate, and walk downhill to the Travertines which helped.

Didn't find Ephesus too busy, but we were there in April, so a bit before tourist season

Have you been to Kalkan? Just booked a trip there in July.

Lived here for 13yrs

Go to Gracia and wonder around a nice neighborhood with small bars and cafes, and if you like Peruvian food or would be interested in trying it I recommend La Punta Callao for dinner. Probably my favourite restaurant

If you have any particular things you like to do just ask and I’m sure I have more recommendations

Including if just going out on the lash
Cheers mate! Thanks for the info. Peruvian food is definitely an option. Have heard the city is good for food generally.

Re going out on the lash, would you recommend any good parts of town for people in their 30s/40s? More sort of chilled out kind of places I guess or just those that are not full of kids?

Yes, visited a couple of times, stayed there once. Can be a bit pricey as it has quite a large villa dwelling community many of whom are Brits. Plenty of choice of eating and drinking places so that is good. One negative, for me, was the very loud music that is played by a couple of discos/clubs until late. By Turkish law not supposed to go past 1.00am but the local police in Antalya province do not enforce this as strictly as is the case in next door Mugla province. Kalkan has good linking bus to nearby Patara (Gelemis village) which is a vast beach. I have read though that they are charging people to go to the beach as if they are going to the nearby ancient site-and that's not cheap. You can though, by quite a circuitous route bypass the toll booths (if you can be bothered. If it more your scene, Kalkan has a number of popular beach clubs you can visit.

Thanks for this. We’re taking a bunch of teenagers with us, so I’m guessing they won’t be put off by the loud noise🤣

Will deffo check out Patara though.
