The question for me will be if we can keep this up when games actually matter next year. I don't think Bill Kenwright and money were the only reason we weren't able to take the next step with him the first time. There was a mental block we had any time we came close to achieving something and it showed in many important games and often in our first halves of the season.

Maybe he is willing to be more adventurous because of the likes of O'Brien and Branners in the backline as we never had this amount of talent at center half (no offense to Jags and Milkman as they were both excellent). Maybe the likes of Ndiaye will change those important games for us as we have never had someone with his ability on the dribble. Maybe Beto stays as durable as he has been and proves to be a reliable goalscorer at some point.

I just don't want to see us choke away half a season like we have done in the past. I want to see us challenge and compete with the top half. With the right signings we can turn it around quickly. We shall see.

Having O’Brien down as a better centre half than jagielka at this point is an absolutely mental shout to be honest.

Talent wise yes. Don't think that is mental whatsoever. Jags was great. O'brien is 6'5 and very skilled with pace. You are mistaking my point of talent for end product

And even though I think he has more talent, I never said either were actually better.

I suppose I just think there’s more to talent than being tall (jagielka was absolutely rapid, I’d be surprised if O’Brien is quicker). I’m not saying he couldn’t possibly turn out better, but at this moment in time it seems a completely over the top suggestion to me.

Talent wise it is no question that O'Brien and Branners have more potential. The thing that really sticks out to me in the modern game is how comfortable almost all the center half's are at passing out the back and joining the play. Maybe Jags would have been a better ball player in this era, but that is what is separating a lot of modern center halves from the prior eras.
