I'm as biased as the next blue when it comes to Liverpool but how on earth did Klopp have average squads?! He took over a side which had finished 2nd 12 months earlier having thrown away the title, now he's left and they're clear at the top of the league. He is clearly a brilliant manager but he didn't exactly win the CL with Tranmere, he did a very good job of managing a very good team.

Again, of course managers can make a difference and squeeze a bit more out of players - I literally stated this in as many words in the original post - but you can't turn straw into gold. There's a reason Carlo Ancelotti has won trophies at AC Milan, PSG, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Bayern but not at Everton and Reggiana - do you want to have a guess at what it is?

EDIT - I was still thinking this was a manager related thread from the replies, apologies for the off topic.
Brian Clough turned straw to gold and Carlo wasn't here long enough to compete for trophies.

This team finished 8th mate, with a brilliant manager….
...and soon improved them massively was my point.

A lot is made of the money they spent and it's a fair shout, but at the time that they signed van Dijk he was still on Everton's radar. Salah had already flopped in the Premier League once etc..

Good managers/coaches take players to the next level, which the last three managers we've had have failed spectacularly at.

How did Klopp get average looking squads (barring a small handful of individuals) challenging for titles?

Premier League football in the modern age is made up of teams with their managers/coaches stamp all over them. If you haven't got a set of good coaches with a good leader at the forefront then you're going nowhere, regardless of the squad.
It's a myth that this team can't perform better or that they can't adapt to a new better style. There are limitations so midtable is a reasonable aim , but these players are not the same level as the promoted sides.

It's odd a few people think this when our GK and centre half could be in champions league , our AM easily top half team and a few others wouldn't leave to a bottom half side.

Okay @Lanolin @SuperKev91, a more recent example..

Alonso at Leverkusen?

Sebastian Hoeneß is the one. 16th to 2nd.

There is a limited impact as to what any new manager can do with this squad.

Limited, but it's the small margins that we need.

I'd generally define a good manager as being one who can get a little more from the collective that he has got.

A very good manager can do it consistently and across clubs. That's very subjective at times and you have to factor in resources available.

When you are in our position and as we've seen sometimes it just needs something different when we can't spend £50m on a new striker..

It's as much about Dyche coming to what seems like a natural end of the line here as what his replacement will bring to the table.

We go for the best fit we can find - and I don't think that can be taken for granted - and try to eek out the points we need.

The glaring problem with all this is that the manager chosen to attempt the above isn't usually the same one that can achieve a more fundamental turnaround ideally starting from scratch in a new season.

You need a lot of luck and good timing to get a manager who is suited to both tasks. If they are not, then the cycle starts over.

And here we are again.

You’re talking about teams stacked with talent, athleticism, pace. Genuine quality on the ball. Compare our squad to Leverkusens mate? It’s embarrassing.

I think a manager can get more out of this lot, just not much more at all.

Who leaves us and goes on to better things?

Pickford, Branthwaite.

Would love to know who else you think is better than our level now (15-20th).

I think you might be back in the bin you know.

Just putting two and two together, I assume they had approval once Chongy sent the letter to the shareholders. I'm sure there's a period in the by laws that must pass before those resolutions are ratified. From what I can piece together (I'm as far from an ITK as possible), it's just a formality now.
