yeah, not sure what will stop it.
I rarely use facebook but very occasionally I post something calling for gun reform.
Nothing extreme, like 'give up all your guns'. More, 'lets try something, and if your solution is solving the mental health crisis, lets fund that'.
Very middle of the road stuff. Yet, 90% of the likes or interactions it gets are ex-pats or people living in other countries.
This happens every time.
A worryingly high percentage of Americans are completely numb to this.
It's a very insular country and there seems to be a feeling of 'this is just normal, it happens everywhere' because to most Americans, everywhere is the rest of America.

The arming teachers suggestion has always been one of the more stupid suggestions the gun nuts put out there to me.
I think I may have mentioned it before in this thread, but the logistics of that idea are completely unworkable (as you’d expect)

The thought that you could give 60yo Mrs. Mabel, the history teacher a handgun and expect her to go head to go head to head with a kid with a semi automatic rifle is utterly ludicrous.
Then the responding police also have to deal with another armed person on site, massive potential for misidentification there.

Are they expected to go on full tactical close quarters weapon training as well?
Most teachers take up the profession to be a part of the ‘noble profession’, to do something positive for kids and young people, not join a paramilitary organisation ffs.

The whole thing is so sickeningly selfish.

I think the idea is that they propose the most stupid solution imaginable so that a moderately stupid suggestion such as armed guards at every school is seen as a suitable compromise and we can then avoid talking about sensible solutions

Yesterday someone shot for parking up the wrong driveway and now this.

It's incomprehensible. Whatever happened to someone saying "oops , sorry my mistake" and instead of pulling a gun "no worries, accidents happen".

It's obviously not every single person in America who is this unhinged but ffs how do these people get so far in life to even reach adulthood and then have the opportunity to pull a gun?

Because they only consume right wing media, and have for 30+ years. This is the logical endgame of all that hatred being spewed to them day in day out for that long of a time period. They live in fear every day that someone is coming for them, that crime is rampant all over the place, and they need to protect themselves.
