I think the man united game is definitely winnable as I think casimaro is still going to be suspended and his absence creates a drastic contrast in United's performance. Also they're still in the fa cup and euros. Just have to commit to the full press like we did against arsenal and they'll get flustered. I think if we play like we have barring the arsenal (away), liverpool games I think we'll scrape by. Not a huge Dysche fan but he's definitely affected the squad in a positive way where we seem to be competitive with most teams and has instilled grit and tenacity along with some coherence to our play. Definitely needs to be commended for the performance so far especially since we've been operating without a target man type striker which Dysche prefers and any significantly creative attacking players

We should beat spurs. Rather points on the board than games in hand. There’s a reason these clubs are at the bottom.
I think under the circumstances we should be looking at this game to get points from.

But wouldn't say we should beat them, I'm sure they are or are one of the most inform teams in the league since the world cup, can't even remember the last time we beat them at goodison? Maybe when Martinez was here and Lennon scored?

Me too.

I've read various articles and it seems there's an agreement along the lines of this conclusion in one of the papers:

'For the soccer specific skills and test with ball, most studies reported that there was no significant negative effects of the fasting month on performance when the training load was maintained or slightly reduced during the Ramadan. Conclusions: The continuance of training during Ramadan fasting, with maintained training load, has no negative effects on short-term maximal performances and soccer specific skills and test with ball. However, performances of the 30-s Wingate test, the RSE tasks, and the long-duration incremental and non-incremental exercises were significantly impaired during Ramadan fasting even when the training load was maintained.'

As others have said, we're not the only PL club with fasting players. However, we are particulalry vulnerable to ill-effects from this fasting because our entire CM are doing this.

It's a concern for me. There's no use burying our heads in the sand over it, but I suppose it's also true to say that maybe it's one fixture in the 4 we have while Ramadan is on that appears to place our players in a particularly vulnerable position: the Spurs game which KO at 8pm and finishes at 10pm. Imagine getting through that game having not eaten after midnight or drank since sunrise at about 6am.
Not to minimize the effort this takes but of course the fasting is only during daylight hours. Often people just reverse their normal eating schedule , especially with a Suhur before daybreak. The big impact is that strictly Muslims may not intake liquids (incl water) during the daylight hours - this can be tough on matchday.

This is the concerning part.

IIRC against Burnley last season in that late KO Doucoure couldn't get liquids into him quick enough once he'd been told it was official sunset time.

I dont understand the, what are in effect, corporal punishments of organised religion. That goes for Christian Lent too, by the way.

It can go for any belief system. These players have one that means they want to follow what you, and I, see as pretty daft. As in, any God, if there is one, IMO, would not castigate you for having an energy drink as a professional athlete cos the suns out.

I have my own private belief system, and cos I believe it, no one can ever convince me it is wrong. Nor daft.

Aside from the spiritual side of it, there are health benefits associated with fasting. Things don't generally make the cut for being part of every single religion in the world unless there's societal or health based benefits associated with it.

I can understand the culture of it all. Any Christian can - lapsed or otherwise. But as you say, any 'just' God wouldn't inflict such strictures on their followers.

I'm not religious, so it's all barmy to me. But they can do what they want. It's their lives. I just react to it when it impacts on Everton.

Yeah, most people in the West are porkers these days and could do with a bit of a fast. But professional athletes dont require that. It hampers them in their employment.

I wouldn't be involved in this thread tbh, but it just seems obvious to me that if a team has three people at its core all fasting for a month then that's going to impact.
