Palace decided they wanted to go a completely different way from the likes of Hodgson playing safety first football and get a young manager and recruit young players. He had been doing a good job until the World Cup. I'd be interested to know the views of @Alan Whittle .

I'm not sure that's true to be honest. They only won 1 of their first 9, then had a little flurry of good results, and then reverted back to a really bad run. I'm not sure they've spent a single week in the top 10 since he took over, and while i'm not saying they should be top 10, it kind of goes against the idea that he was doing a great job when you look at it that way. Looking at it from an Everton perspective, they're the only team we've score more than 2 against in our last 43 games, and we've done it twice.

It just shows yet again that if you’re not at a top 6 club you are one bad run, transfer window, or injury, away from ending up in a relegation battle and being fired. No matter what profile your manager is or what philosophy the club has. Rodgers Lage Vieira were all the rage last season. It’s looking like none will be here by the end of this season, but Palace Wolves and Leicester all did things the right way and had philosophies…apparently.

You are correct and it's one of the reasons that football , at least at the top level is losing its attraction for me.

I agree, this league can be brutal like that. You'd also think at some point Brighton will make a mis-step with a managerial hire or player recruitment and find themselves dropping.

But back to the clubs you mentioned, Leicester in the last 7 years have won a league, an FA Cup, had some top 7 finishes and played in Europe. Wolves had a couple of top 7 finishes and played in Europe. Palace have finished more or less where they were under Hodgson, but have done so whilst overhauling the profile of their squad to younger players that will most likely net them more in transfer fees. And you'd have to say none of them are currently amongst the 3 teams that you'd tip to go down this season.

So what they've done is probably still more sustainable than hiring an old dar as manager who buys a load of old grocks to play percentage football that is guaranteed to have you in a relegation battle more often than not.
