‘No Excuses’: Seamus Coleman Makes Honest Everton Admission

Seamus Coleman has spoken of his regret at the nature of Everton’s League Cup exit last month.

The Blues travelled to Molyneux to face a Wolves side without a win in the Premier League.

Indeed, Moyes’ side had overcome the Midlands club in a 3-2 just weeks before and were in decent form.

An expected fanbase travelled midweek, but seven changes to the starting XI only highlighted our lack of depth.

Despite making nine changes to their XI, Wolves progressed to the next round with a 2-0 win.

Everton captain Seamus Coleman has now spoken about the game, stating there are ‘no excuses’ for the performance.

He said: “Every Premier League manager uses the Carabao Cup to give players some minutes. It’s a squad game these days and the players need time on the pitch.

“We did the same, but sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. It’s never easy to hit the ground running when you haven’t been playing regularly but there are no excuses from me – the performance on the night wasn’t good enough over the 90 minutes.

“It was a setback I wasn’t expecting and it hurt. There aren’t many opportunities to win silverware and I felt for our supporters who once again packed the away end at Molineux.”

EVERTON MUST LEARN TO TAKE LEAGUE CUP SERIOUSLY

Coleman started the game at Wolves, though in the unfamiliar position of left-back. Indeed, the likes of Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were left out of the starting XI.

However, fringe players such as Dwight McNeil and Carlos Alcaraz failed to seize their opportunity.

As Coleman states, the League Cup is a chance to realistically compete for a piece of silverware. Once again, however, the competition was not taken seriously.

Just because ‘every Premier League manager’ rests players for League Cup fixtures, doesn’t mean we have to.

If anything, that should be motivation to put out our strongest side and go for it. The mentality at this club baffles me at times.
