Report: Everton now weigh up move for 25-year-old defender who is a ‘complete player’

Everton are interested in signing Fenerbahçe centre-half Attila Szalai as the Blues look to rebuild their defence under Sean Dyche.

The Hungarian once described by his international manager as a ‘complete player’ would be available for a fee of around £17m.

That is according to Turkish outlet Star, who report that Everton are just one of a number of European clubs chasing Szalai’s signature.

Indeed, the Toffees could face competition from the likes of Valencia, Wolfsburg and Zenit Saint Petersburg, while Anderlecht have already been offered the chance of signing him.

Courted throughout Europe, the 25-year-old has been a standout star for Fenerbahçe since joining in club in January 2021 and lifted the Turkish Cup last season.

Szalai to Everton would be strong signing

It is not the first time that the Hungary international has been linked with a Premier League move, with Fotomac reporting that West Ham were close to agreeing a deal last summer before the move collapsed.

The Hammers’ loss could be Everton’s gain and there is need for a rebuild in the Toffees’ backline this summer, following high-profile departures.

Yerry Mina left the club on a free transfer after five years and Conor Coady returned to parent club Wolves following his loan spell last season.

Prodigious youngster Jarrad Branthwaite returns to Merseyside following his loan deal with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, but Everton remain short at the back.

Szalai is highly regarded throughout Europe and with his experience he could be a very strong addition to the squad, but how much Everton have to spend this summer remains to be seen.

As the transfer window gathers pace, Everton continue to be linked with countless names, though movement is slow and any chances of getting deals done early appear to be slim.
