Wigan 2-2 Everton

An 87th minute penalty from Leighton Baines earned Everton a point in a 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Arouna Kone nodded home the simplest of chances to give the hosts a controversial lead after just ten minutes, following good work by Shaun Maloneydown the left.

“He is half a yard offside and the linesman is nowhere near in line,” complained Moyes.

But Everton trailed for only 72 seconds. Their reply was emphatic. Steven Pienaar miscued shot crossed and Nikica Jelavic finished at the far post with a header.

Everton´s best spell of the game came to an abrupt end in the 23rd minute when Gary Caldwell aimed a long ball into space behind the Everton defence. Kone chased it down, sprinted away from the lacklustre Heitinga and then delayed for long enough for a team-mate to get into the penalty box. He then picked out Franco di Santo, who thumped his shot high into the net. 2-1 Wigan.

It took Everton rather longer to draw level for a second time. Everton were behind for an hour, despite Baines prodding a shot against the post and Leon Osman and Mirallas subjecting the Wigan goal to a bombardment.

Finally, Mirallas went down inside the area and Baines, who scored four times in his 162 games for Wigan, grabbed his third against them to earn a deserved draw.
