Zonal Marking - article on Fellaini

Problem is, all the new money around will have the effect of pushing wages and transfer fees up so when buying you're not going to get as much for your money as you did this season. The so called financial fair play rules will also push transfer fees up since clubs will be after top dollar for anyone they sell so as to keep a lid on their net spending. Add in our case the need to pay off ban debt then I think we can probably assume that our activity in the transfer market will be limited.

Our debt is small and more than manageable, so I don't know why everyone is obsessed with wanting to reduce it?

It's the deficit that has been the problem, with us making a 9million pound loss last year. The new TV money will stop these losses, and there will not be a loss again until we spend MORE than our accumulated revenue, which includes ALL of the new TV money.

So we shouldn't be demanding a mere 10million of new TV money be spent on funding and maintaining player purchases, we should be demanding that ALL of the TV money be spent on acquiring and maintaining top quality new players, which depending on who you listen to might equate to an EXTRA 40million each season for the next three seasons.

I can't believe people are ambivalent towards an extra 40million each season for the next 3 seasons, as such a figure is more than double what you get for qualifying for the Champions League. It's how that money is spent that will determine who gets the advantage, but I refuse to accept that it does not represent an opportunity just because "Everyone else gets it as well".

The only people who will really benefit from paying off our debt are the major shareholders, as it will increase their return on investment if the club was to be sold.

If we are due an extra 120 million in the next 3 years, then we should be accessing ALL of that cash this Summer IMO, or at least have someone loaning us an extra 30 or 40 million as they know they will get it back next season.

We have benefited considerably from the previous TV deals, Andy Johnson, Lescott and Howard etc etc wouldn't have been playing for Everton without the big increases in revenue that have been brought about through previous TV deals, imo.

Good debate Ive started. IMO to get 25-30m or a defensive midfielder (albeit a very good one) would be a good deal for us. Fellaini defensive weaknesses e.g positioning, tracking runners is porr. The market for him has dwindled though so unlikley to be able to start a bidding war though

Moyes has said in a recent interview http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/dugout-moyes-outlines-impact-new-tv-cash-084453244.html that because of FFP rules kicking in he's unsure how many extra players clubs will buy due to restrictions on wage budgets

Moyes, who has worked wonders with a relatively limited budget at Everton, describes how teams may use the £60 million from the new Premier League TV rights deal to cover transfers and additional wages.
“I do think we’ll see some increased spending this summer,” Moyes told Yahoo!-Eurosport. “The new money will give clubs the feeling that they have to try and use it.
“There are quite a lot of clubs in debt who might use the money to pay off that debt.
“The biggest implications this year will be wages and whether, with the new rules coming in, will clubs be able to pay the wages for the new players.
“That could cause problems for clubs.”

It was shown last season that the role that Cahill was playing was being countered by every team in the league, to try and continue with the role with Fellaini is shortsighted beyond belief. We have played better in games when he's been out than when he is played in the role behind the striker. Moyes either needs to play him as defensive midfield or sell him.

Its Moyes's system - if he stays for 10 more years we'll play that system most of the time for 10 years ((with experimentation when there's nothing to play for at the end of the season). He's shown no evidence of wanting to change it from what it was in the past, apart from occasionally opting for two defensive players in the middle instead of the one in the past (Carsley).

When I first read about FFP I thought the same myself - we sell Fellaini to reduce the wage budget to the point where its fair, but we cant replace him with a player of similar quality AND squad players, it'll be one or the other. Unfortunately I think we're consigned to a small squad for the forseeable, meaning we stand still or move backwards

Financial "fair" play in action eh...

Or am I misunderstanding it? We won't be improving our revenues because we cant just "sell more" shirts or in-stadium catering....and would a push on corporate make a difference really?

For us to have a much bigger squad we'd need to slash our current wage bill, probably losing the higher earners

New FFP means for us that we can higher our wage bill £4m per season as our overall wage bill is over £52m already. So basically that means that if nobody would go out of doors in this summer, then we can afford only a new £75k player per season to add to our wage bill.

Well for this summer, what it can mean.. Hypothetically, if we sell Fellaini (75k per week) for 26M, Heitinga (55k) for 4M and Neville (35k) for free, then it basically means that we can buy players in total wage bill 240k per week. That should be enough to bring in 5-6 quality players like Negredo (60k) for 15M, Belhanda (50k) for 8M, Fer (30k) for 7M, de Vrij (30k) for 5M, and Chadli (30k) for 5M plus maybe a free player like Weiss (20k) for nothing or a loan.. We would rise our wage bill for that 4M per season, we would spend 10M in this season for transfers, plus we had a season loss around 10M, so that would be 24M loss. But thankfully to that new TV deal, which will give us at least extra 30M and possibly a lot more. Then that means, that this would be perfectaly managable and we will have money left for agent fees, investments to academy etc, we should be in a quite solid profit even after the next season.. And I think our team would be way better than our current one..

I think Fellaini impacts the game most the further up the pitch he is. Moyes has been reluctant to use him in that spot for much of the matches with Anichebe playing well and at times the squad has suffered imo.

I wouldn't say he's wasted as a DM. Certainly he is proficient but it is not, contrary to what he believes, his best position. And I think he's easily replaceable in that spot, especially as Gibson will be lying deeper.

I think the issue at hand is how you replicate his role as a 10. You can do it in many different ways, but let's be honest, after Cahill's form dropped this squad was helpless. So for me there's great trepidation in moving him.

He is a great player and selling him sends us back into the unknown, but I don't think he's irreplaceable. I think if you sell this one player and are able to bring in 2-3 to strengthen the squad, you do it.

You can't score without the ball. Nobody wins it back quicker or more often than him. Having him press higher up the pitch with a player like Gibson in behind suits us perfectly. With him ACM you can't play attacking on the counter and you need to be able to counter in this league.

I don't think possession has been a concern. Goal scoring, I think has. I think you either put the best goal scorer on the team closer to goal (Fellaini) or you have to find someone much, much more creative to play the 10. In order to do that, someone expensive has to go imo.

I certainly wouldn't be upset to see him stay, great player. And the obviously solution is to add to the squad, not sell to buy. But this is Everton and I do like me some reality.

Meanwhile Arsenal can pay 4 left backs 50k/w each. fair play my arse.

Everybody is getting TV money. Not everybody is getting Fellaini money. BUT not everybody is as chronically skint as EFC.

Unless EFC finds some bargains, the money will only go so far, and EFC will still be up to its nipples in debt and wage turnover.

I see us buying a partner for Gibson, playing Ross in the Fellaini spot, and sticking with Jela/Anichibe for the fall. Some of the remaining money will go to depth, and the rest will pay bills, renew contracts, and we'll sit on 8-10mil in case we need to buy a striker in January 2014.

But it benefits the teams people pay to watch (united, arsenal, the two rich teams and Liverpool, maybe spurs) - and they're the ones that bring the money to the rest of us, they go to Europe and advertise our league a lot better than teams like us so why wouldn't the sponsors want them in there?

It's ridiculous and it'll drive a lot of fans away from football in the end
