If he stays, which is most likely going to happen with it being so late in the window.....Where is his head at ? You now have a player who has said he wants to leave and he is pulling on a shirt each week that he doesn't really want to. Even with a fully focused, raring to go, happy Zaha, Palace are still likely to be fighting down at the bottom end. Its a dangerous game.
Yes, agreed. Palace's woeful lack of succession planning is at the heart of this mess.

If the latest position is true (who knows?)
My take, from a Palace perspective, is this;
1. Wilf wants to go.
2. He and his advisors have been told he can go for £80m
3. No one has offered £80m. It could reasonably be argued that £65m plus Tosun and McCarthy is equal to or greater than £80m but we would (a) sooner have the cash or (b) keep Wilf.
4. Paying £80m cash now is too late. Plus everyone will know we have £80m (less 25% to Man. U.)
5. I doubt whether Wilf will kick off about it. He will want to keep the impression of a good pro (which he is) and either in January, depending on our start, or at the end of the season, he will be off. Palace will sell at some point. I think his peak value won't last too much longer.
6.The £80m was the price at which Palace hoped no one would pay.

Still, two days left. Anything could happen.
Wilf; stop playing with my head ffs.

I think your instinct is right here mate. If it were Spurs or City as the only game in town right now rather than Everton, my guess is he'd agitate now as they have CL footy this season. We don't, and so I'm guessing he'd be more inclined to see what comes in Jan / next Summer.

As has been said on here, risky for him (CL clubs may simply not want him - they haven't been interested to date) and for CP (they are unlikely to get the same price in future windows).

To be honest, there's more value in honouring your commitment to sell the player if he wants to go, like we have done over the years and even this year with Gana.

Otherwise you develop the reputation of being a quagmire for young talent who can't progress.

You've told Zaha he can go - so let him go. I understand it'll relegate you if you do, so it's not quite as straightforward as it seems, but that's poor management from the club - they should have been actively selling him earlier and bringing in others.
If the player wants to leave they should indeed sell the player. But only when it suits the club to do so.
The clubs interests should always outweigh the players.

Because it's only 50 odd hours till the window closes, I'd say it's slightly more likely he stays than joins us. Like maybe 60 40 in favour of staying at palace. But as you say, anything could happen.

Could see us paying something like 70m with Mccarthy going the other way. I think palace already bid for him so it's probably safe to say he will be part of discussions.

Err...... ok, I'm convinced!

I think it'll probably relegate you regardless though at this point. It depends on where Zaha's head is at - professionalism aside it's hard to excel at a job you don't really want to do anymore, especially when you're earning less money than you feel you should.

Take the money and the players and look to balance out weaknesses and grind out survival. It's what I'd do anyway - either way I'd expect Palace to finish 16th-18th this year, which I take no pleasure in saying as Crystanbul makes me forever love you guys.

They're not paying the 72m upfront, Palace want it all up front

That’s just the terms of the deal. That’s still how much they will end up paying though.

If we really want Zaha that badly we will pay it. My point was he’s a safer bet than Arsenals gamble.

He was using the fact that Arsenal walked away as some kind of significant point.

Thing is though, why would you rather have the cash?

If we just paid £80m, you owe 25% to United, which would be £20m, taking the amount to £60m. Taking £65m and the players nets you £47m, meaning you get Tosun and McCarthy combined for £13m.

If your club wants those two players, reducing the cash amount is a no brainer really.
Tosun and McCarthy are rubbish, they would be on the bench after a few games.

How many games has McCarthy played in 2 seasons, and how many goals has tosun scored in 18 months.

It's like burnley bidding for holgate and giving vydra and McNeil and 3m

They told the player they'd let him go. If they hadn't have outright made that commitment, I'd have zero issue with Palace holding on to the player.

Doesn't come across as a very strong article that. Almost click bait. I'd have thought King would be covering this story in the mail too.

King would from our end. Any inside info in that article will be from Palace's side. The journo in question is based in London.

Sure, but the feeling is Palace are interested in those two players. I'm not talking about the logic in why they are interested in them.

Silva won't let it go, he was relentless with richarlison, I expect him to do the same with zaha

I think McCarthy is of less interest if we get Camarasso over the line.Genuinely think we prefer him. Would take Tosun as an upgrade on Benteke (not saying that much tbh) but no time to ship him out. Don't think we're keen on anyone else.

I think if you hold players hostage it gets noticed in the modern football world, overpowered agents et al. Us letting players like Gueye go for a reasonable price, (and lukkaku etc.) probably reflects well on us as a good club to do business with. For better or worse.
