Your opinion of a male nurse caring for your child

Good on ya lad, plenty of spaces for male nurses as there arent many around. Means you can travel and work wherever really because theres a demand.

Alright lads and lasses

I would like if possible some (sensible) opinions on the following:

I am a mature student (33) going to university in September to study to be a child nurse. I had my own business until not long ago, a sole trader in construction and got fed up of it. I was doing ok financially in fact everything was sound apart from I wasn't happy not using my brain (I think I knew the job too well, there was no challenge)

So without going into all the details I am doing an access to higher education course and going uni in september to do the degree.

I told this to someone the other day and they had a go saying I was weird! bearing in mind I have two daughters (7 & 10) have a valid CRB/DBS check done by the NHS and volunteer one day a week on our local children's intensive care ward helping out for experience.

My question is how would you feel if a 33 year old man is the nurse looking after your sick young daughter or son as it is generally a female orientated environment?

Thanks

G

Makes no difference male or female mate.

Good luck and fair play mate.

:)

I'd imagine some people would have a weirdly sexist problem with it but personally? Gender is irrelevant in this case, to me -- your qualifications and recommendations are what's key.

It would be sexist to think this is anything but normal.

Male nurses everywhere. Whys pediatrics different?

Eh? Why? Can't people have a debate on here any more? I don't believe in any way that males should be discriminated against in this circumstance, but I can sure as hell find reasons why people might have issue with it, and I love a good debate.

As long as things don't turn nasty and people start getting all homophobic or whatnot, it's surely not a problem right?

Same thing as gays in football, I've no problem with it but would have no issue having to debate on the subject and play the role as "against". Debates are cool.

da fuq is dis?

You need to change your friends - this guy sounds like a proper kermit.

The world needs more male teachers and nurses. We can't let a few 70 dj's make us feel like all us chaps are dodgy.

When my babies were born they were put in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit ), the vast majority of the nurses are obviously female but there were two males nurses. It seemed weird at first to me as we'd seen nothing but females so seeing another male in the place stood out. They got the same scrutiny as the female nurses did from me, that is, once they showed me they knew their stuff and were confident in themselves, I had no problem with them looking after the boys(the babies, not my balls).

If the nurse is qualified and cares then I don't care what gender they are. In many respects a male nurse may be a better option for boys in hospital as certain things may be less embarrassing than with a female nurse. It's gender stereotyping that society has accustomed us to that makes most people immediately think of nurses as female.
