Jack Rodwell says hello :bye:
Rodwell you could see was always one of those Lilleshall conveyor belt players with all the basics nailed down right. Barkley has a lot more to him than that. He;s defo in Sarri's plans and I think he'll be a starter before the end of the season.

I don't think he's getting in ahead of Kovacic, but agree that Ross is definitely in Sarri's plans.

Ross could have been the Loftus-Cheek type, and that's what he started off as. A marauding, powerful player with pace and an eye for a goal/pass.

Due to a combination of injuries and management (I believe mismanagement, especially from Martinez), Ross naturally developed into a player better suited to a slightly deeper role if played in midfield, imo. And he should be looking at Kovacic as a perfect example of a player around the same age who has taken his game to the next level, and also a similar style of player.

If Ross is ever going to be a 'marauding' runner again, like he was in 13-14, then he has to start in a wider position with the freedom to roam (which is where his best form in 16-17 under Koeman came).

Lol. He reached the national squad and team under Martinez and had his best ever season under him. As part of that Martinez-era counterattacking unit he was lethal.

Mismanagement? Yes, but only by Koeman, who set out with some ruthlessness to destroy Barkley's confidence - for some reason only known to that Dutch weirdo.

I agree that he has talent and skill but has a bit of the Aiden McGeady football brain about him which stagnated his progress to think quick on the ball and make the right passes when under pressure from the opposition. Always thought he be more suited to playing in the centre of the park than in the number 10 role facing the opposition when receiving the ball than receiving it further up the pitch with his back to goal with less space. Martinez away to WBA played him in the centre of the park and was one if not his best performance in an Everton shirt.

Mismanagement in the sense that I think Martinez - after the first season - tried to use Ross in a role that wasn't what he excelled at.

Ross was given the duty of setting our tempo and I don't think that suited his best attributes at that point in time. I said it then so I have no issues with saying it now. I think Ross was overcoached when he was younger and I think that rawness was his biggest strength. Injuries were also an issue.

IIRC Martinez played him as one of two CMs against QPR at Goodison just before Christmas 2014. We won 3-1, he scored and ran the show.

He's versatile. I think he'll respect Sarri and do what's asked of him by reining in his natural instinct to go direct and attack on his own.

Barkely was rubbish?

Lol.

You'll be seeing him picking a PL title medal up soon...and still calling him rubbish.
Barkley isn’t rubbish but was clearly overrated by many on here. Having a PL medal, which he won’t get this year anyway doesn’t mean a great deal either. Marc Albrighton has a PL title medal.

That said, he’d help our midfield instantly these days.
